Dear Editor,
Has the Public Health Minister George Norton joined the growing list of homo sapiens playing and preying on the gullibility of the Guyanese populace? The idea of a mere apology being sufficient atonement for his displayed falsehood in the drug bond fiasco, only serves to add further insult to injury. In fact, to give it its proper recognition, it is a stunning gut-wrenching blow to the APNU + AFC administration, and their pre- election promise of transparency and accountability.
Here we have the current Administration on one hand doing their darndest to highlight the wrongdoings and skullduggery of the previous government, while others within the same party are running amok committing similar ( if not more serious) offences. Even intense grilling and questioning failed to produce the truth, it leaving me to wonder if in Guyana the word truth is not viewed or defined the same by everyone.
In the world of Hinduism, Truth is defined as unchangeable, and that which has no distortion and is beyond distinctions of time space and person. The national motto of India “Satyamevajayat” ( Truth alone wins) as well as “ Satyam muktaye” ( Truth liberates) speaks for itself. When an individual is firmly established in speaking the truth, the fruits of action become subservient to him.
Temporarily casting aside this drug bond fiasco, a lingering question still remains, and one that centers around Dr. Norton and his fulfillment of the Hippocratic Oath. In light of his glaring dishonesty and deception, can he be trusted to have conducted his practice according to the Hippocratic Oath, that he has sworn to uphold during his practice of medicine? Was he assuming two roles- one of doctor and the other of deviant? Or should we resort to wishing and hoping that from now on the Minister would undergo a Pinocchio- like experience whenever he speaks.
I am calling on the Granger Administration to carry out a full public inquiry in this matter, the results of which would surely serve as a foundation for vindication of the promise of accountability and transparency made to the Guyanese population during the last election campaign. There is too much at stake at the Administration level to disregard this request.
