When Alzarri Joseph made his test debut at the Daren Sammy’s National Stadium in St. Lucia against India, he joined his compatriots Dave and Sylvester Joseph; the Antiguans are the only players with that surname that have the distinction of playing at the test level for the West Indies. Dave made his test debut against the touring Australians led by the legendary Steve Waugh in 1999. Strange enough that was the pugnacious right hander’s only test series. Unlike Dave, Sylvester ‘Bouncing’ Joseph never had the pleasure of playing in a full test series, he only had five test matches, playing against different opponents.
Today, Kaieteur Sports and Statistician Charwayne Walker looks back at several other prominent players with that surname that just failed to wear the maroon at the test level for the West Indies.
Harold ‘Mystery Man’ Joseph, this Trini genius toured Zimbabwe in 1981 with the West Indies under-26 B team and Australia for World Series Cricket in 1981/82.
Ray Joseph, this Guyanese speedster was the leading wicket taker when young England toured the Caribbean in 1980. He also played County cricket for Northamptonshire in 1985. His career best was 6 for 114 vs Jamaica at Sabina Park in 1984.
Dawnley Allister Joseph, this pugnacious right hander was the leading run scorer when the Brian Lara led B team toured Zimbabwe in 1989.
He also featured for the President XI against Australia 1991 at Warner Park, St. Kitts, Pakistan 1993 at Bourda and England 1994 at Bourda.
He opened the batting for the West Indies under-19 in 1985 against young England.
Career best: 149 vs Zimbabwe, Harare Sports Club 1989.
Lynden Anthony Joseph, this Guyanese fast bowling all rounder toured Zimbabwe with the Brian Lara led West Indies B team in 1989. The following year 1990, he played at the English County Level for Hampshire. After capturing 23 wickets in the 1992 Red Stripe Cup, Joseph was spectacular for the West Indies (A) against England (A). Injuries caused him to miss the final unofficial test at the mecca Kensington Oval. He still topped the bowling averages with 12 wickets, he also represented the West Indies under-23 against India at Warner Park, St Kitts in 1989 and against Australia at Arnos Vale, St. Vincent in 1991. Career Best: 6 for 551 vs Jamaica at Sabina Park 1992.
Jensen Joseph, West Indies (A) vs India 1995 toured Florida 1995 with West Indian A Team, Elder Brother of Dave Joseph.
Keon Joseph, this Guyanese speedster played at the ICC Under-19 Youth World Cup in New Zealand in 2010. He just featured in two President XI matches for the West Indies against India in St. Kitts.
Unlike his predecessors mentioned above, Keon is still active and will want to join Alzarri, Dave and Sylvester and keep the Joseph name on the test scene.
