A day of fun, referred to as a “play session,” was held yesterday for St Lucian Cub Scout, eight-year-old Nick Omarie Joseph, at the Scout Association headquarters on Woolford Avenue.
According to reports, Joseph is recovering well, but still shows some sigh of trauma as he is now withdrawn and hardly socialising with anyone except his mother. When this publication dropped in on the occasion, Joseph was sitting next to his mother looking at the other children play video games.
Speaking to Kaieteur News, Joseph’s mother, Delia Finistere said that when she first learned of the accident she couldn’t speak for at least half an hour. After regaining her composure, she called the St Lucian Scout Association and was told that the officials there didn’t know of an accident.
Finistere said that she took initiative and went to the airport where she immediately booked a flight to Guyana. Upon arrival, she went straight to the Georgetown Public Hospital. She said that at the hospital, she had a hard time getting into the Intensive Care Unit.
The woman said that when she saw her son lying on the bed, she was overwhelmed and worried beyond words.
She however expressed gratitude that he has recovered to the state that he is at present. She did explain that Nick, who is normally an energetic and social child, is currently subdued and withdrawn, which is unusual for him.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Commissioner of the Scout Association, Zaida Joaquin, told this newspaper that the doctors noticed the “traumatic” effects of the accident had affected Nick and suggested that he interact with peers of his age group.
Joaquin said that the Scout Association subsequently organized a “play session” where scouts of Joseph’s age group could play video games, interact and have refreshments. She noted that at first he did seem withdrawn, but he then started looking eagerly at the other children. She expressed confidence that he would begin interacting with his peers before the day was over.
Nick Joseph and his compatriot Parnell Matthew, 9, were participating in the 14th Caribbean Scouts Cuboree which was held here recently, when they were struck down on Woolford Avenue, on July 26.
Tracy Fordyce, the driver of the car who struck down the children, was arrested and placed before the court. She was sentenced to 10 months imprisonment on a charge of dangerous driving and fined $15,000 for the breach of a One-Way.
