All systems are in place for the 10 annual Guyana Cup Horserace meet today at the Port Mourant Turf Club. Fans are also reminded that the Berbice River Bridge will close from 1:30pm today and open until 3:30pm.
More sponsors joined the fray for the event, which is dubbed the biggest horserace meet of the racing calendar locally and the most lucrative sporting event of the year in Guyana with over $30M on offer.
The event which is organized by the Jumbo Jet Business Enterprise and friends is being staged in collaboration with the Port Mourant Turf Club with support from the Government of Guyana.
The latest business entity to swing into action for a spot on the event is entertainment giant Palm Court of Georgetown. They join business heavyweight Banks DIH Limited, Trophy Stall and Digicel in playing major parts.
The Grand Stand has been rehabilitated and extended to accommodate the thousands who are expected to throng the venue on race day.
The venue has also been spruced up to cater for the absolute comfort of all, with running water and additional lavatory facilities.
Over 100 stalls are now available at the venue with a number of new ones built or refurbished to accommodate the volume of horses set to compete today.
A number of foreign and overseas based jockeys will be in action. Among the jockeys expected to be in the saddles are overseas Ronald Alli, Noor Mohammed, and Brian Blake and Nicholas Patrick.
The overseas based Michael Semple and the local brigade that includes the likes of Rupert Ramnauth, Randolph Richmond, Yap “Old Boy” Drepaul, Navin Ally, Rad Drepaul, Junior Semple, Andy Ramnauth, Mahendra Sukhoo, Michael Sancho, Prem Chandra, Winston Apadhu, Nacimento, T Baker, Takurdial, Michael Sancho, Junior Sookhan, Russel Chichester, Ajai Sansarran and John Rodriguez among others.
Incentives will also be available for the top Jockey the runner up, the top stable and champion trainer. There will also be free programmes and parking for vehicles.
