The Guyana Men’s squash team began its quest for the Men’s Team title yesterday having to play both their pool matches on the same day.
Placed in the most difficult pool, with Jamaica and Cayman Islands, Guyana faced an uphill task to try and qualify for last night’s semi-finals. In the morning match up, and without Sunil Seth who is out with an ankle injury, Guyana took on defending champions Jamaica. In Jamaica’s line-up were Men’s Individual Champion and its runner up, Chris Binnie and Lewis Walters respectively.
First up was Guyana’s number two player Richard Chin against Lewis Walters in what turned out to be a huge win for Guyana, Chin claimed the match by three games to nil. Chin did not compete in the individuals and was well rested for the team event.
Next on was former National Champion Nyron Joseph who was up against Jonathan Walker at the number five position. Nyron would go on to dispatch Walker in three straight games as well.
With Guyana up two matches to nil, it was Alex Arjoon, playing the number one position, who had to face Chris Binnie, and while he put up a valiant effort, he lost in three tight games. Jason Khalil would go on next but lost his bid to close out the match with a three-nil lost to Julian Morrison of Jamaica.
It was then left up to Kristian Jeffery to play the decider, and wasted no time in racing to a 3-1 win against his opponent Dane Schwier, allowing Guyana to claim a 3-2 match win.
The evening saw a bigger challenge with Guyana coming up against Cayman Islands who had in their lineup, individual men’s semi-finalist Cameron Stafford and former world rater Mark Chaloner.
The playing order quickly saw Guyana go down 3-0 in matches as Chin, Joseph and Arjoon all lost the first three matches against Chaloner, Alex Garner and Stafford respectively.
However, both Chin and Joseph were able to capture key games which came back to benefit the team later on. Jason Khalil then won his match in four games, before Kristian Jeffery playing the final match won his match in four as well.
This meant Guyana lost 3-2 and the pool was all tied up in match wins as Jamaica and Cayman had played to a 3-2 Jamaica win. On count back, Guyana advanced along with Cayman Islands on net games (2 to be exact). They will now play in tonight’s semi-final against Bermuda.
The women’s team continues to roll on, as they defeated hosts Trinidad and Tobago by a five-nil margin yesterday afternoon. Mary Fung-A-Fatt, Larissa and Akelia Wiltshire, Victoria Arjoon and Taylor Fernandes all had wins for the ladies. They will now play Barbados today in a virtual final to decide the ladies team winner.
The Veterans team also emerged victors on Friday as they defeated OECS by three matches to one.
