…as moves are made to improve the institution
A call for more professionalism at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation is being made by
Chairman of the Board of Directors, Dr. Carl ‘Max’ Hanoman.
According to Dr. Hanoman, he and other members of the Board have been putting in an enormous amount of work to transform the hospital into an atmosphere that is conducive to the delivery of quality health care.
“I spend a lot of time in this hospital…But this thing needs a lot more time than I can give,” Dr. Hanoman said.
The members of the Board include Colonel Patrick West; Cleopatra Barkoye; Collette Adams (Deputy Permanent Secretary, Public Health Ministry); Mandy Sukhdeo; Sonya Roopnauth; Kempton Alexander, with Dr. Hanoman sitting at its helm. Dr. Sheik Amir, the hospital’s Director of Medical and Professional Services and Mr. Allan Johnson, the hospital’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, are the Ex-Officio Members.
And according to Dr. Hanoman, in the improvement quest, each member of the Board is tasked with putting measures in place that will help to enhance the premier health facility.
“My team, we divide our time; we are divided into different areas…we have people looking at dietary, financial issues, heads of Human Resources and buildings and so on. Each member of the Board is looking at a different area and the job is enormous, but we have been trying to do it,” the Board Chairman said.
He, however, noted that “we have taken a lot of beating in the press, but we have done a lot of work…if you go and ask people they will tell you. We are trying to fix things, but there are problems in this hospital,” Dr. Hanoman admitted.
He alluded to issues such as dishonesty and pilfering as challenges faced by the institution. “There are a lot of problems, but we are going to do what we must, bit by bit…things have to improve; things have to change and we will give you the change,” the Chairman insisted as he added that, “given the support of the government I will fix things at this hospital…remember I am just the Chairman, and I am not an executive Chairman.”
Nevertheless, Dr. Hanoman noted that putting things in place at the health institution is something that he is dedicated to seeing materialise.
A key focus of the Board too, he disclosed, is to address relationships among staff members and that between staffers and patients too.
“We need to have friendly nurses and patient relationships and doctor and patient relationships. In fact, I would like to see a team, a family at this hospital, that can deliver loving and tender care,” asserted Dr. Hanoman.
Dr. Hanoman said that since he took up the position of Chairman, in March, there have been numerous reports of a lack of teamwork at the institution. In fact, he disclosed that “there is fragmentation of the hospital system…there was poor dialogue within the nurses’ system and doctors”.
It was the lack of collaboration between the nurses and doctors that reportedly led to the Director of Nursing Services, Ms. Collene Hicks, being sent on administrative leave to facilitate an investigation into her conduct which was believed to be tantamount to unprofessionalism.
According to Dr. Hanoman, a Committee of Inquiry is expected to be established to investigate the allegations. The matter, this publication understands, should have gained the attention of the Board at a meeting earlier this week, but this did not materialise, as there was not a quorum.
