Kapil Haresh Thakur of Foulis, Enmore, East Coast Demerara, has been remanded to prison on a charge
of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
According to the facts provided to the court by Customs Anti Narcotics (CANU) Prosecutor, Konyo Sandiford–Thompson, Thakur attempted to ship 88.2 kilograms of cocaine contained in a quantity of seafood via an outgoing flight at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) on August 9, last.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared before Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
According to the facts provided, Thakur attempted to ship, a quantity of fish and shrimp to New York when it was intercepted and checked by CANU officers at CJIA.
During the search, CANU officials are said to have unearthed a quantity of small pellets concealed in the backbone of the frozen fish. The items were later tested, proven to be cocaine, and weighed. Thakur was detained.
Attorney Peter Hugh provided legal representation for Thakur. He asked for a speedy trial and that bail be granted in a reasonable sum.
The bail request was denied and the defendant was remanded to prison until August 26.
