Nineteen-year-old Chandi Dyal Singh, also known as ‘Vikash’, of Lot ‘H’ Lima Public Road, Essequibo Coast, is the country’s latest road fatality. Singh was involved in an accident on the Three Friends Public Road on Thursday at
around 21:00 hours.
Reports reaching this publication suggest that Singh was driving his neighbour’s car, PTT 5016, when tragedy struck.
There are reports, that the young man was speeding and swerved into a utility pole which is positioned on the western side of the thoroughfare, causing him to lose control. The vehicle ended up in a nearby trench.
According to the man’s grieving mother, Padmini Singh, her only child reportedly died three hours after the accident. She disclosed that after the accident someone brought her son’s phone to her informing her of what had happened. She heard that he was bleeding from his nose.
The woman said that she immediately ventured to the scene of the accident and later to the Suddie Hospital, since her son had already been transported there. There she learnt that he had sustained severe injuries to his head and stomach, and had succumbed as a result.
One of the dead man’s aunts stated, that although her nephew suffered internal injuries he was conscious, and was able to walk into a room at the hospital. She believes that the persons who treated her nephew could have been more observant and shown more urgency. The woman alleged that no effort was made to give her nephew any oxygen, although he had complained about not being able to breathe.
“My nephew was asking for his mother and he was saying he cannot breathe,” the woman related.
Meanwhile, Padmini Singh disclosed that her son left home around 20:45 hours to pick
up a neighbour, Adella Cameron, who had attended a crusade several villages away. The woman related that since the teen was a licenced driver he would, on occasions, be a chauffeur to his neighbour, who happens to be the owner of the vehicle. Cameron, this publication was told, does not have a driver’s license.
In an invited comment, Cameron admitted that she owned the now mangled vehicle for almost two years, and would allow the young man to use it for his own purposes sometimes too.
Chandi Dyal Singh worked with his mother at the Charity and Anna Regina Old Markets where they have pharmacies.
The accident has brought back vivid memories to Padmini Singh of when she lost her husband (Chandi’s father) several years ago. He was involved in an accident on the Cotton Field Public Road. At the time, the woman said, her now dead son was just a baby.
A post mortem examination is expected to be conducted on the remains of Chandi Dyal Singh sometime next week.
Meanwhile, one week ago, a 53-year-old Charity, Essequibo Coast man lost his life on the Jibb Public Road after he was ran over by a car. The driver has since been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and was released on $10,000 bail.
