Dear Editor;
With reference to the above-mentioned subject, I wish to draw the attention of the relevant authorities to a serious problem affecting residents of East Strathavon, East Coast Demerara. Three persons are squatting on the access dam which is the government reserve at East Strathavon. Fences were erected by these persons who do not reside anywhere around the dam. People who previously used this dam to access their farms and rice fields are prevented by the squatters from doing so. They have to traverse a longer distance and use the rice field dam which is in a deplorable state. Vegetables are cultivated and dangerous chemicals are sprayed everyday e.g. Fastak, Bestak, Roga 40. Vegetables are sprayed at any time during the day and harvested for sale next morning. Residents including babies and the elderly have to endure this daily, also school children using the road next to the dam.
While Cane Grove is an agricultural area, the rice fields are situated some distance away from residents. In addition, rice farmers do not spray often. Complaints were made to the NDC at Cane Grove without any help. Letters were sent last year and earlier this year to the NDC, the Chairman Region 4, the Minister of Communities and the Board for Dangerous Poisons and Chemicals; and to date this matter has not been addressed. A delegation visited the Regional Chairman and stated its concerns.
Because we live on the leeward side of the dam, our homes, clothing, food and bodies are all contaminated. Residents are being pushed around by the officials in authority who do not seem to care about our health or welfare. We are fed up and need urgent intervention in this matter.
Concerned Resident
