Impressive March Pass heralds start of 10 days of rivalry

Seventeen villages from pristine green areas deep in the heart of Guyana converged at the Kopinang Ground in Region #8 on Wednesday afternoon last for the start of what is anticipated to be 10-days of exciting rivalry in football (male & female), volleyball (female), cricket (male & female), archery (female) as well as road races.
In feature remarks before declaring open the championships, National Director of Community Development Council (CDC), Eugene Gilbert expressed pleasure at being invited to officiate at such a beautiful activity in a beautiful area in Guyana.
Gilbert told the gathering of players, officials and well wishers many of who traveled for days to be there that he was inspired by the scenic beauty of Region #8.
“It is the preeminence scene for great tourism in Guyana. I’ve also met wonderful people which are also an asset that you have to promote Kopinang and Region 8 as a tourism destination.”
Gilbert expressed the good wishes of Minister of State Mr. Joseph Harmon to the athletes and people of Region #8 noting that the Minister could not have been present.
He noted that focus if now on the region from the CDC standpoint and it is their wish to capture the resource and potential in building strong CDC groups with a view of arranging and organizing more resources from the donor community, locally and internationally to aid in the development of the communities.
”It is indeed a privilege on our part to partake in this Fiesta. This is no ordinary activity and achievement. It is well recognized around the world that sports is an opportunity for healing, sports is an opportunity for people getting together, sports is an opportunity for people to develop themselves, sports is an opportunity for communities to grow and we welcome this initiative.”
Gilbert stated that it his intention as head of the CDC to promote more events of this nature noting that it is his wish for the fiesta to be an annual affair.
He also promised that more resources would be mobilized to make the activity more spectacular.
Chairman of Region #8 Bonadventure Fredericks in remarks welcomed all the teams noting that it was a privilege to be part of this inaugural event which brings together youths in a positive way.
”I want to remind you that in every sport there is discipline so I want to remind you all to play in an atmosphere of discipline and professionalism over the next few days. I would like to wish all of you the best.”
Fredericks also expressed thanks to all the businesses which contributed towards the fiesta and its success.
Deputy Regional Executive Officer Gavin Ganga who is based at Madhia also offered words of congratulations to the teams and organizers for putting all the plans in place for the event.
Dr Simpson Da Silva a veterinary surgeon and former Minister of Agriculture, REO of Region #7 Mr Rawle Edinboro also attended the opening.
Businessman Deoraj Dhanraj among others was complimented for partnering with the organizers to bring off the fiesta.
The competing villages are Kopinang, Chenapou, Maikwak, Kamana, Waipa, Kaibarpai, Itabac, Penak, Kanapang, Karbararu, Chinengmouth, Kato, Paramakatoi, Tuseneng, Monkey Mountain, Taruka, Karisparu.
