When Carl Hooper relinquished the captaincy for the Regional Under-19 Championship in August 1985, the million dollar question Guyanese cricket fans were asking was if Hooper’s replacement Latchman Bhansingh could bring home the bacon but those fears were laid to rest. Although Bhansingh was the man wearing the captaincy armband and calling plays, the mighty Carl was the man with the Midas touch. His 180 led Guyana to the first innings points over the Leewards at Bourda in the opening encounter, he followed that up with 120 against Barbados at Rose Hall, that innings also saw Guyana to a first innings advantage. Rain brought a premature end to those proceedings. Although he failed with the bat in both innings against the Windward Islands at Eve Leary his match figures of eleven for 90 led Guyana to a 93 runs outright victory that set the stage for the tournament glory.
In the penultimate round against Jamaica at Everest, he and pacer Colwyn Cort combination condemned Jamaica to 141 all out. Cort took 5 for 44 and Hooper 4- 26 in the final round against Trinidad and Tobago at Eve Leary; it was Hooper mania. Carl took 7 for 81, Trinidad and Tobago 221 all out and dominated a century partnership with Neil Barry. His contribution was 82, Neil ‘Lion’ Barry 71. Guyana made 242 for 7 and took the 1985 Northern Telecoms Trophy.
