A Venezuelan woman was yesterday jailed for three years, after she pleaded guilty to having 10 live rounds of 3.80 ammunition in her possession, without being the holder of a firearm licence.
Paz Pino, who spoke to the court through the aid of a Spanish interpreter, pleaded with Magistrate Leron Daly for leniency.
She broke down in tears while telling the court she has children to take care of and could not have afforded to retain an attorney to defend her.
Police Inspector Kerry London presented the case for the prosecution.
In another case, 19 –year-old O’Neil Nebert was remanded to prison by the same magistrate, for possession of an unlawful firearm and ammunition.
It is alleged that on August 2, at Essequibo, Nebert had three live 12-gauge cartridges in his possession when he was not the holder of a firearm licence. It was further alleged that on the same day, at Essequibo, Nebert had a 12-gauge single barrel shotgun.
The unrepresented man, who resides at 12 La Grange, West Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the allegations.
He was instructed to make his next court appearance on September 15.
