As part of efforts to show support for Government’s thrust for a ‘Green Economy,’ the Private Sector Commission (PSC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with The Energy and Resources Institute, (TERI) towards embracing and understanding green growth and sustainable development in Guyana.
TERI is a not for profit organisation policy research organization based in India – working in the fields of energy, environment and sustainable.
The signing took place at the Marriott Hotel in Kingston, Georgetown, on Monday. Those present included Chairman of the PSC Commission Eddie Boyer, Junior Minister of Finance, Jaipaul Sharma, High Commission of India to Guyana Mr. Venkatachalam Mahalingam, members of the PSC and other representatives.
During his remarks, Boyer noted that President David Granger committed Guyana to join in the global efforts to combat climate change when he signed on to the Paris Agreement in April of this year. He said that the PSC is therefore cognizant of the need for the business community to support those efforts.
“As a result we are seeking to enhance our knowledge through a partnership (with TERI).”
The Chairman said that the Commission is fully committed to supporting the Government’s thrust towards a green economy since the role of business in this effort is pivotal to the success of this venture.“
According to Boyer, it is also the desire of the PSC to maintain good corporate citizenship and embrace the need for the pursuit of green growth and sustainable development. He noted that the common impediment to the expansion of our private sector and the country’s competitiveness is energy.
“The high cost of energy is perhaps the greatest barrier to the development and expansion of our manufacturing sector. “
“We are today signing a Memorandum of Understanding with TERI that allows us to harness technical advice and support, in areas of climate change, energy, environment and sustainable development. This commitment was the catalyst for the engagement of the PSC with TERI, and led directly to this Memorandum of Understanding which we are about to sign today. We live in a country full of natural resources, and unless we care for these, manage them properly and use them efficiently, we would be doing a grave injustice to our God-given gift,” Boyer said.
He pointed out that TERI has moved from formulating local and national-level strategies, to shaping global solutions for critical issues.
“It has the conviction and understanding that efficient utilization of energy, and sustainable use of natural resources, would propel the process of development for any country. This visionary organization was formed in India and has taken its message across the world.
The MOU, which will initially be for three years, is broad in its scope. It allows for TERI to work hand in hand with the PSC in various areas, including the sustaining of green growth, conducting energy performance audits, sharing research and technology, exploring renewable energy options for business, and establishing linkages with private sector entities in India.
Meanwhile, General Director of TERI, Dr. Ajay Mathur, noted that TERI started work with the Government of Guyana in 2011 and over the five years to date, working through the President’s Office, TERI’s technical teams have undertaken activities in the area of energy management and working in the core economic sectors of Guyana.
Mathur said that TERI has assisted the Guyana Sugar Corporation, Guyana Rice Development Board, Guyana Power and Light Company and Guyana Energy Agency among others, through several initiatives which have yielded technological and other improvements. Principal among these initiatives include improving energy efficiency in the sugar factories of GuySuCo; improving energy management of rice mills and the successful introduction of a 400 Kw gasifier technology in one large operation, and which has served as model in the sector for waste to energy conversion.
TERI, founded in 1972 and headquartered in Delhi, India, is one of the largest developing country research organisations and has worked extensively in the fields of climate change, energy, environment, and sustainable development. TERI has a staff of over 1200 persons with a presence in North America, four locations in Europe, Africa and several locations in Asia.
