Dear Editor;
I recently attended the 14th Caribbean Cuboree held in Guyana from the 24-29, July 2016. I must commend you on the coverage your newspaper gave to the cuboree. This will assist in keeping scouting alive in Guyana. As a young scout, I attended the 3rd Caribbean jamboree hosted by Guyana which was held in August, 1969, and I camped at the Queen Elizabeth Park, which today is now known as The National Park.
After this jamboree, scouting took a nosedive and almost became extinct in Guyana. After forty years I returned to Guyana in 2009 as a leader to attend the 13th Caribbean jamboree. This was a significant feat. Needless to say I did not find anyone who attended the 3rd Caribbean jamboree and the younger generation did not even know about it. When I tell the scouts and leaders of today, I camped at Queen Elizabeth Park, they were astonished as they never heard of the park by its original name. I even rode on the train from Georgetown to New Amsterdam and back.
I am an ardent scout and do have some memorabilia from that 3rd Caribbean jamboree. At the cuboree, I collected the numerous newspaper articles written by your newspaper and brought them back to Trinidad which I will keep as part of my scouting collection. However, I departed Guyana on the 30th July, 2016 and I am not sure if I missed any articles. If you have copies of the induction of the President (I believe it was printed on 17 July) and any article on Guyana night which may have been printed 1st or 2nd August, 2016 will be welcomed.
I would like to get original newsprint copies. I have a friend, Laurence Fung, a leader, you can contact him and give him copies of the articles to pass on to me. [email protected]. Maybe next time I visit Guyana, we can do an interview on my memories from 1969 jamboree.
