When the allegation of theft of over $29M from the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) was put to Carvil Duncan at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown, he remained silent.
This is according to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kendranauth Byjamaul. He testified yesterday when the trial continued before Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The policeman assisted with investigations.
Byjamaul told the court that a few days after, Duncan submitted a typed and signed statement to him.
ASP Byjamaul testified that he read the allegation to Duncan in the presence of a Police Constable and also cautioned him according to the judge’s rule.
The police witness told the court that he kept the statement in his possession and conducted further investigations in the matter. He said that based on information received, he contacted Lorraine Bancroft, the Corporate Secretary to GPL’s Board of Directors.
Bancroft, he recounted, also submitted a signed statement along with copies of eight documents. His testimony was suspended until tomorrow.
Duncan, 73, of Lot 1977 Williamstad Road, Festival City, Georgetown, is accused of conspiring with another to steal the sum of $27,757,500 belonging to GPL between May 7 and 8, 2015, at Georgetown. It was further alleged that on March 31, 2015, Duncan stole $984, 900 also belonging to GPL.
Duncan is currently out on $1M bail.
It was reported that Duncan and a former senior official at GPL were part of a multimillion-dollar fraud at the power company. They allegedly paid themselves close to $30M belonging to GPL without authorization.
