Amelia’s Ward Jets were upset by the returning Kwakwani who scored an emphatic 88-65 win and placed themselves in a strong position to reach the semifinals and join Victory Valley Royals; who gained back-to-back victories to cement a place alongside top seed Retrieve Raiders when the 3rd Rock Entertainment Promotions Open basketball championship began over the last weekend at the Mackenzie Sports Club hard court.
On Saturday led by their roving players leading the Kwakwani side which thumped the Jets in the night cap game 88-65, guard Dominique Douglas hit 21 points, Leonard Primo 17 and Evan Johnson 16 being their outstanding players. Only Orin Rose looked good for his 19 points while Akini Wilson supported in a losing cause with nine.
In the opening game last Saturday night, Royals closed out second seed Half Mile Bulls 69-53 as Harold Adams spearheaded their win with 14 points, Alwyn Rodney and Trevor Profitt each netted 12 and Orlando Glasgow got 13 and Chris Williams eight.
Last Sunday the Royals gained their second win to make it to the finals, beating Block 22 Flames 57-30 with Glasgow leading their charge with 16 points, Williams got 14 and Adams added 10. Only Selwyn Henry with eight showed much resistance to the Royals who now wait to see if the Bulls will make it through with a win over Flames come Saturday.
Should the Flames upend Bulls, they will advance along with Royals to battle for a final place.
In the other group play only one team will move through from among Jets, Falcons and Kwakwani. Jets’ only hopes of reaching lies with Falcons scoring an unlikely win over Kwakwani in the first game come Saturday. The other team waiting to play that team which advance is the top ranked Retrieve Raiders, who gained a bye to this round due to the format used in this seven team championship.
The final is set for next Saturday at the same venue.
