Several loggers in Region Ten were yesterday exposed to training in the use of the Global Positioning System, (GPS) at the LEN Conference Room on Republic Avenue, Linden.
The training programme which is expected to culminate today is geared at teaching members of the local forestry association how to use the GPS.
Chris Davis, an official attached to the Forestry training Centre said that with the knowledge garnered, participants would be able to use the GPS receiver to determine the positions of every tree that they cut.
“We’re here in Linden conducting this training on the use of the GPS, which is primarily to teach people how to use this navigational tool to determine the position or coordinates of every tree that they cut from the forest,” Davis said, adding that participants are also being taught map reading.
According to Davis, by using the GPS, loggers would be less likely to overstep the boundaries of their concessions.
Participants commended the initiative, and were high in praise of the facilitators.
“I think it’s a very edifying and good programme. It is very good for the small loggers and would help to keep them on the safe side. They would be less likely to overstep their boundaries, one man posited.
Alicia Allen, who spoke on behalf of her female colleagues posited, “I agree with my colleague that it is very edifying. We don’t usually get this sort of thing (training), so we have to make the best use of it.”
Davis said that his team has already done training in Coomacka and Blue Berry Hill.
Logging which preceded bauxite mining in Region Ten, has over the past couple of decades made a big comeback, and has been providing employment for hundreds of persons in the forestry sector. (Enid Joaquin)
