As excitement builds for the inaugural staging of the 2016 North Pakarimas Summer Fiesta, a number other companies have come forth to chip in, while Regional Executive Officer of Region 7 Roderick Edinboro has praised the organisers for what he said is an event taking place at a very critical time. REO Edinboro said that he trust that other hinterland regions including his will emulate what is being proposed for Region 8, thus ensuring that sports can be further developed.
The REO, who indicated that he will be visiting the event with the view of better understanding the magnitude and scope of the games, said that having such an event doesn’t only bring the villages together but it also seeks in forging better relationships while enhancing development among the various communities.
He stressed that with a number of villages expected to compete it will serve as a catalyst to propel and identify a number of talented sportsmen and women from the region into securing the well needed exposure that has been lacking. “Many of the youths in communities like these have the talent, unfortunately there isn’t any programme and/or events to help in identifying these and therefore they are forced many times to abandon their dreams. However, with such an initiative by the North Pakarimas Sports and Culture Association, they need to be fully commenced as they are laying the needed ground work for the advancement of the region through sports,” he said.
He issued a passionate appeal for corporate Guyana to lend support wherever necessary thus ensuring that the work that has alreadybeen done by NPSCA can continue. “They (NPSCA) has started an initiative which should be continued and commended as they are helping in a significant way to advance sports development, while probing the needed opportunities. However, for this to work you need the holistic support of the corporate community as with corporate support a number of great things will happen. I want to see initiatives like these grow and I intend to collaborate with Region 8 in ensuring that these events and activities can certainly grow,” he declared.
With the official launch slated for today, Wednesday, a number of senior government officials are expected to grace the event. Minister of State Joe Harmon will deliver the feature address and declare the event open along with National Director of Community Development Council (CDC), Eugene Gilbert. Ministers Sydney Allicock and Valerie Lowe along with Director of Sports Christopher Jones are also among those slated to be at the event.
One of the organisers disclosed that already a number of villages have arrived while the remaining villages were expected in by last night. Some 20 odd villages are slated to compete in Male and Female football, male and female cricket, female volleyball, male and female archery and road races. Some 820 athletes are expected to compete over the ten days with each village competing to be dubbed as the Champion village of Region 8.
Meanwhile, a number of other companies have joined the list of sports with the latest sponsors being Banks DIH, Tony’s Auto Sales, Regal Stationary and Computer Centre and S. Jagmohan Constriction. Many of the companies that have joined the list of sponsors’ expressed excitement at being able to contribute to an event that primarily seek to bring about youth and community development. They expressed satisfaction that such a major activity has the potential of bringing about economic development while at the same time opening opportunities for holistic development.
Mr. Gilbert noted, “NPSCA should be highly commended as they are certainly playing a critically important role in assisting in the further development of sports here and I applaud their efforts.” Gilbert congratulated all the sponsors adding that, “We at CDC fully understands the importance of initiatives like these which seeks to bring the people and their villages together, thus we don’t have no hesitation in collaborating with them and knowing Minister Harmon’s passion for youth development I am sure that is what also propelled him into supporting.”
