The Chairman of the National Taskforce Commission, Major General (Ret’d) Joe Singh has informed the public that there have been progress around the country to address the issues of drainage and flooding.
The Commission recently briefed the media at the Ministry of Public Infrastructure to offer status updates on its various projects. The Chairman, in the company of Sewnauth Punalall, Head of the Commission Secretariat, said that the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority have done a fair amount of work in clearing outfalls.
He said that in Region Four, the NDIA has completed clearing the Little Diamond outfall. Further, the Hope Canal drainage channel has come into operation. He said this is important since it is necessary to ensure that the East Demerara water conservancy is kept at a manageable level.
According to the Major General, about a week ago in Region Five the NDIA completed clearing the outfall at Trafalgar. Additional pumps were also installed there, Golden Grove and Tempe villages.
Currently, he said, the NDIA is doing work in Region Six to clear outfalls at key areas. In Region Ten, work is being done to clear the silted soakaways which have been out of operation for quite some time. Excavators were deployed to Block 22, Wismar, to clear the drainage infrastructure.
Soakaways are used to allow excess water to get into the earth according to the Chairman.
Additionally, work has been done to repair some key sluices in Aurora, Essequibo Coast, Region Two. Drainage works were also done by NDIA for West Watooka farmers.
These developments are timely since it was reported in the recent flooding incidents that the issue of silted outfalls were one of the main reasons responsible for flood waters not draining off the land.
It had been recommended by the Dutch Risk Reduction Team that maintenance of sluices is necessary to addressing flooding in Guyana.
The DRR Team suggested, too, that the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) should exploit its own cutter suction dredge for the maintenance of the outfall channels, as well as river and river mouth sections.
Additionally, the team suggested that small floating dredges can be used in municipal and residential areas to de-silt drainage sluices.
