Dear Editor;
I write in response to a letter published in the letter section of the Kaieteur News dated 08/05/2016 and captioned, “Is Minister Broomes being vindictive?” The letter, penned under the hand of one Sherwayne Delano Downer, made a number of allegations against Minister within the Ministry of Natural Resources, Simona Broomes, From the tone of the letter it appears that Mr. Downer was keen on injecting some carefully crafted and politically slanted opinions which I believed are aimed to attack the competence of the minister and discredit her performance.
Had I not known Minister Broomes, I may have been inclined to believe some of the serious allegations Mr. Downer leveled against her. However, like most Guyanese who have watched her over these fifteen months in office, I more inclined to question the motive and intent of the letter writer.
I know Minister Broomes as someone who is very passionate about a cause and is often resolute in her resolve to address things head on. I do not claim to have any perquisite knowledge of the episode the writer alluded to but I do know that he presented a number of scenarios which will be difficult for anyone who knows Broomes to rationalize or associate with her attitude. With regard to the question of vindictiveness, it will remain a question answered in the negative.
Like so many Guyanese, I believe that Minister Broomes has demonstrated the ability to exhibit fearless, steady and humbling leadership which have captivated the hearts and minds of many ordinary Guyanese, and given the way this writer has attacked her personally, it is reasonable for one to conclude that the intention here might be more convoluted and sinister. As we say in colloquial language, looks like Downer “get nuff axe to grind.”
