Bail was set at $250,000 by Magistrate Leron Daly for a driver charged with trafficking cannabis sativa (marijuana).
Eusan Luke, 23, of Lot 50 Fourth Avenue, Bartica, is accused of having 220 grams of cannabis in his possession on July 19, at Itaballi for the purpose of trafficking.
Luke pleaded not guilty to the allegation and was instructed to return to court on September 13, before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
An Attorney for the defendant asked for his client to be released on reasonable bail. He said that special circumstances arise from the situation in which his client was charged.
The lawyer said that on the day in question, Luke was heading to the Interior, after he was hired by five men with cargo.
He said that his client was the driver of the vehicle which was stopped at the Itaballi check point for routine police checks.
According to the Attorney, the defendant along with the passengers was searched by police but nothing was found in their possession. He added that lawmen subsequently searched the vehicle and the alleged narcotics were found tucked away in the rear passenger seat.
Based on evidence, the lawyer stated that Luke and the other individual were taken into police custody and later released on station bail due to police being uncertain of who the illicit drug belonged to.
Police Inspector Kevin London presented the case for the prosecution.
