A tenant residing at Lot 41 Norton Street, Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara, is accusing his landlord, Lennox Cordis, of breaking into his home and stealing $150,000 while he was at work.
The tenant, Glenmore Reevers, 56, is claiming that his landlord did renovation works on the building which houses three other apartments without his permission. He said that he was at work on Friday, when Cordis called him via cell phone and told him that he wanted to do some works on the premises.
Reevers said that at no time during the telephone conversation did he permit his landlord to commence any works. Reevers explained that he was at work when he received the phone call and immediately consulted with his boss, whom he said, relieved him of duties for the day so that he could go home.
According to Reevers, by the time he got home a wall separating his apartment from another had already been dismantled. He alleged that his entire home was ransacked and upon checking he noticed that his monies were missing. He also claimed that several items in his home were damaged.
Reevers claimed that the missing monies were to buy construction materials for a house he is building in Timehri since the one he is residing in now is in a deplorable state. He stated that it is unusual for him to leave large sums of monies at home.
The father of one who has been occupying the apartment for the last five years said that the wall was not replaced until he reported the matter to the Providence Police Station. He said that police ranks came to the premises and had things resolved.
The tenant revealed that police charged Cordis with damage to property but is unaware of the outcome of the matter involving the stolen money.
However, when contacted by this publication, Cordis claimed that the allegations being made against him by Reevers are lies. Cordis claimed that he was given the “okay” by the tenant to go ahead with the renovation works.
“I didn’t thief any money. Nobody wants to do him that. I ain’t no thief. I am a very respectable man. He is just trying to get vindictive,” Cordis exclaimed.
Cordis confirmed that he was charged with damage to property and was released on bail. He is expected to make a court appearance on Tuesday.
