Dear Editor;
After 50 yrs of Independence Guyana narcissistic leaders have failed to impress me that they are capable of leading a country into first world status. I heard the most laughable claim of Guyana now being ranked an upper middle class country.
One thing I know for sure is that we can break records. Guyana has an 89% migration rate of tertiary educated nationals aged 25 and older which is considered the highest in the world.
It means that for every 100 people that complete University, CPCE or Guyana’s School of nursing only 11 will stay in Guyana. Number2 – Guyana somehow with a population of 750,000 people was able to make the ranks of the country with highest suicide rate per capita, in the world.
Number 3- Guyana has a whopping 40% unemployment rate among its youths, which means that for every 10 persons that are of working age 4 cannot fund jobs, not to mention how many are underemployed.
Along with this of those 11 tertiary educated that stayed in Guyana only 6.6 of them are going to be employed. Crossing my desk are applications from persons with Diplomas in Marketing and completing their first year degrees, these individuals are vying for sales reps positions that pay maximum $50,000 monthly.
Do we think jobs are a solution to the problem? With the existing structure of our economy can the government create jobs for everyone? Take four scenarios: 1. The Government is too busy trying to uncover inadequacies and misgivings of the pass administration. Is it worth doing?
After 14 months in power, there is sufficient information for the Government to take necessary action and prosecute people where necessary and let the rest lie low.
2. The Government is challenged with honestly a quagmire situation where they are forced to throw money and time at problems that are not generating any revenue or fixing catastrophic ones e.g, the Guysuco fiasco and the Petro Caribe deal, forestry exploitation, improperly negotiated gold deals etc.
3. Hundreds of millions of dollars were expended in a Jubilee celebration that no doubt created positive domino effect in certain business sectors but it can be evidenced that the long term effects are nonexistent. 4.
There are absolutely no public led, private investments where entrepreneurship is encouraged.
It is is one thing to talk about creating your own jobs and it is another thing to show them how it is done where their culture post-independence, is to be an employee.
Business incubators are herby nonexistent The question that now comes to mind is whether the Government is capable of leading the country into first world status and will it take another hundred years before this becomes a reality. Singapore, a country with no natural resources did this in record time.
United Arab Emirates made the most expensive and attractive tourist destination in the world out of literally nothing (desert sands) knowing that their oil reserves, the major source of their foreign revenues are depleting.
Knowing that the politicians have proven to be either lacking the insight, incapable to execute their plans, or for some reason slothful in making the resources of knowledge available, I believe that there are three solutions. Because I learnt that if you see something you don’t like… Shut Up or Fix it. Let’s form a business incubator with the responsibility of generating entrepreneurs.
Of course the goal is to attract enough funding that we can surpass Israel and become the country with the most startups in the world. We invite the government to come and talk with us about how we can partner to make this a reality.
Let us form a collaboration and place the country in the hands of people with vision. I’m willing to vie for the position of President of the Co-Operative Republic of Guyana in 2020 Lets collaborate create the future we want.
