Bhawanie Harrinarine, called “Moon,” who consumed a poisonous substance after chopping his estranged partner and her mother at their Greenwich Park, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) home Wednesday night, has succumbed.
Harrinarine died at the West Demerara Regional Hospital on Friday.
Around 22:40 hrs, the fisherman went berserk and chopped his estranged partner, 25-year-old Bibi Shareema Khan, and stabbed her mother, Bibi Shameela Shamshudeen, 50, when he sneaked into their home.
While Shamshudeen is in a stable condition, her daughter is battling for her life on a life support machine in the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC)’s Intensive Care Unit.
According to reports, the suspect broke into Shamshudeen’s home and chopped Khan while she was asleep. Her three children, who were sleeping next to her, managed to escape unhurt.
However, the woman’s mother was not so lucky. She was stabbed by the suspect when she rushed to her daughter’s aid. The motive for the attack is unclear.
The older woman’s sister, Waheeda, explained that she was at home when her brother called and informed her that her sibling and her daughter were attacked, and that they were in a serious state at the hospital.
She recalled that when she visited the hospital, she met her sister who told her that she was asleep when she heard her daughter screaming for her.
“She said that she went into the room and went on the bed and hugged her daughter. Then she felt her skin was wet. The light was off, so she couldn’t see. When she went to put the light on, this boy come and start stabbing her,” Shamshudeen said.
The suspect then escaped from the house.
It was the mother’s younger daughter who rushed to neighbours and informed them of what had happened.
Shamshudeen’s husband, Mohamed Ibrahim, said that he was at work when one of his daughters called and urged him to rush home, since her mother and sister were bleeding profusely.
“She was crying, so right away I know it was something serious and I rushed home. When I go, I saw two relatives hoisting my wife to put her in the car, and I rush upstairs and bring down my stepdaughter,” the man recounted.
While Ibrahim could not say what caused the attack, he said that he was informed that his stepdaughter, (Khan) and her estranged partner had an argument sometime back, during which time he had threatened her.
“He (suspect) walked out and left his girl when she was pregnant. He didn’t want the child; he said that the child was not his, so she moved back with us and we say we will take care of the baby. The child is now one year old,” the man said.
He added that although the suspect refused to financially support the child, he would still go to their home to visit the baby. “He always going there and molesting her (Khan) and his family also disown this baby.”
Khan has three children. Harrinarine was the father of the smallest child.
