A police constable, who was on the run after shooting an alleged wife beater at Itaballi, Region Seven was arrested yesterday in the vicinity of Teperu Crossing.
According to information received, around 20:00 hrs on Friday, a woman went to the police at Itaballi Check Point and made a report that her daughter was being assaulted by her (daughter’s) reputed husband.
A police press release stated that the subordinate officer in-charge sent a constable with a Service revolver, along with the woman who made the report.
On arrival, the assailant was contacted and in the intervening process an argument ensued between the constable and the assailant.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the policeman struck the assailant to the head with the firearm and the man fell, after which it is further alleged that the policeman discharged a round at the assailant, hitting him in the upper chest.
The victim was taken by the said constable to the Bartica Hospital where he is being treated. His condition is regarded as serious but stable.
Kaieteur News was told that the constable fled after taking the man to the hospital.
Police ranks who were on the hunt for the constable since Friday night managed to locate him around 06:00 hrs yesterday.
He (the constable) was still in possession of the force’s firearm.
The Office of Professional Responsibility is conducting a separate investigation into the purported breaches of standard operating procedure by the constable.
