A Voir Dire (trial within a trial) is currently underway in the Preliminary Inquiry (PI) being conducted into the murder of businessman Ganesh ‘Boyo’ Ramlall, at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
Lennox Roberts called ‘Soldier Man’, 32, of 2279 Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara; Fazeel Bacchus also known as ‘Javed’, 21, of 7 Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara and Kurt Erskine called ‘Banana Man’, 35, of 285 Section ‘C’, Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara, are currently on remand for the offence.
Yesterday, Police Sergeants Rodwell Sarrabo and Salaish Roopnarine gave evidence when the Voir Dire continued. This Voir Dire is being done to ascertain whether a caution statement given by Bacchus was provided willingly or involuntarily. It will also determine if the caution statement can be admitted as evidence in the PI.
Sergeant Sarrabo is the Officer in Charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Brickdam Police Station. Sergeant Roopnarine is stationed at the Special Organized Crime Unit (SOCU).
At the time of the murder, both policemen were attached to the Major Crimes Investigation Unit, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown. They assisted with investigations.
Sergeant Sarrabo was cross examined by Lyndon Amsterdam, Attorney for Erskine. Cross examination for Sergeant Roopnarine was deferred.
Bacchus and Roberts are being represented by Attorneys Mortimer Codette and Bernard De Santos SC, respectively. However, these two Attorneys were not present for the hearing.
The PI has been adjourned until August 30, when other police witnesses are scheduled to take the stand.
According to reports, on July 5, 2015, Ramlall had just returned home from a barbecue and had gone to use an outdoor bathroom. The 48-year-old businessman was reportedly confronted by four men who shot him to the head and chest, before taking away his jewellery, a wallet and escaping.
Ramlall was later pronounced dead on arrival at the West Demerara Regional Hospital. The bandits prematurely aborted the attack when an alarm was raised by the businessman’s wife and neighbours.
