A mini fiesta of football will be the order of things on Sunday at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground as teams hunt quarterfinal places in the Mayor’s Cup football championship in the hope of advancing to stake a claim on the Mayor’s Cup and Aruwai first prize.
Four games should provide a choc-full of entertainment for fans trouping to the venue. Action starts from as early as 3:00pm with Police taking on the Anthony Sancho led Camptown in what is expected to be a competitive encounter.
Next up at 5:00pm Riddim Squad with the talented Amos Ramsey leading their charge will look to put down Beavers of the Westside in an anticipated feisty contest. Santos then look to hand the ‘boot’ to Pouderoyen in their contest starting at 7:00pm. But the Westside team have their own bag of tricks to unleash to orchestrate the exit of the City dwellers. An exciting match-up is anticipated.
The night cap at 9:00pm should also produce another crowd pleaser when Western Tigers with the skillful Randolph Wagner heading their outfit challenge Den Amstel. Both sides are expected to come ‘tooth and nail’ in what should be a pitched battle as they look to outdo the other and secure a quarterfinal spot.
Quarterfinals are scheduled for August 19 at the same venue and the winners of the respective games will advance to contest for semifinal places. The semis are set of August 21 and final and third place August 28.
The tournament had a slight delay for over two weeks due to weather conditions leaving the various playing venues not suitable.
At stake in the championship is the top prize of $700,000 and a trophy donated by Aruwai Resort. The second place team pockets $300,000 and the Ansa McAl trophy, while the third place team carts off $200,000 and the John Fernandes trophy. The fourth place finishers will receive $100,000 and the Ministry of State trophy. Ricks and Sari has also donated hampers which will go to the winning team, while tournament’s top goal scorer will get a three piece suite compliments of AH&L Kissoon Furniture Store.
Top Brandz of Broad and High Streets, distributors of Interstate vehicle batteries, is among the key sponsors on board assisting the tournament. Aruwai Resort of the Essequibo River is also another main supporter of this year’s event and Coordinator Lennox Arthur has expressed thanks to all the sponsors.
Apart from Aruwai Resort and Top Brandz, others on board include: Ansa McAl, Minister of State Joe Harmon and his ministry, John Fernandes, Ricks and Sari and AH&L Kissoon.
