“You need to work for your own,” were the words uttered by Magistrate Judy Latchman to a man she
sent to prisons for 12 months for theft.
Tiberius Spencer, 20, of Sand Creek Village South Central Rupununi, admitted that between July 5 and 6 at St. Ignatius Village, Central Rupununi, he broke into the shop of Sharon Fredericks and stole two boxes of chicken, 23 pounds of pork, 30 pounds of fish among other items all totaling $166,060— property of Fredericks.
The young man told the court that he and his friend broke into the shop but he only collected a few bottles of High Wine, three small bottles of Vodka, pork, fish, chicken and XL energy drinks.
He claimed that his friend carted off the other items.
Police Prosecutor, Kerry Bostwick told the court that the complainant is a shop owner. He said that on July 5, around 20:00hrs, Fredericks secured her shop after conducting business and left for home. Bostwick said that the complainant returned to her shop the following day and noticed that an eastern door was open and the items were missing.
Bostwick said that a report was made to police and Spencer was arrested by cops on mobile patrol in Lethem. According to Bostwick, Spencer admitted to police in the presence of his mother that he committed the offence.
Before passing sentence, the Magistrate considered all mitigating factors; the prevalence of the offence and the fact that Spencer entered an early guilty plea.
