Members of the successful Guyana Benson and Hedges championship team as they returned home back in 1976.
Statistician Charwayne Walker continues his look back at Regional Cricket history, today looking back at the 1976 Benson and Hedges tournament in which Guyana was successful.
Off-spinner Suresh Ganouri and Leg spinner Sen Gopaul played integral roles entroute to Guyana retaining the 1976 Benson and Hedges Regional Under-19 Cricket Championship. Ganouri mesmerized the Windward Islands at Rose Hall with match figures of 13 for 59, while Sen Gopaul 12 for 79 destroyed Jamaica in the Finals at Sabina Park, opener Andrew Lyght was the other Guyanese hero in the finals. His 106 was superb. En route to the finals Guyana lost first innings to Barbados at Albion. Rebounded and beat the Windward Islands outright at Rose Hall, while the Windwards took first innings from Barbados.
Opening match – Guyana vs Barbados at Albion: Guyana first innings 153 all out. Mark Harper 39, Ramrattan Jagnarine 32, Andrew Lyght 32. Bowling for Barbados leg spinner George Linton bagged 4 for 32, Ronald Graham 2 for 35, Noel Broomes 2 for 10. Barbados first innings 250 all out; Anthony Depeiza 44, George Linton 42, Calvin Hope 37, Malcolm Marshall 36. Bowling for Guyana Sen Gopaul took 4 for 64, Suresh Ganouri 2 for 23, pacer Keith Farley 2 for 63. Guyana second innings 214 all out; Harry Ramsunai 61, Sen Gopaul 40, Abdool Gafoor 28. Bowling for Barbados leg spinner George Linton captured 7 for 91. Barbados second innings 81 for 6, Malcolm Marshall 18, Pedro Corbin 18. Bowling for Guyana, Sen Gopaul took 3 for 23 and Jerry Angus 2 for 23. Result: Math Drawn.
Guyana vs Windward Islands at Rose Hall – Result: Guyana won by 10 wickets. Windward Islands first innings 116 all out. Albert Teixeira 36 not out, John Scotland 23, Thomas Kentish 22. Bowling for Guyana: off spinner Suresh Ganouri was unplayable with figures of 7 for 24, pacer Keith Farley, who started the slide, captured 2 for 18. Guyana first innings 248 for 8 declared. Skipper Timur Mohamed 73, Mark Harper 48, Deryck Kallicharran 38. Bowling for the Windward Islands Winston Davis snared 3 for 80, off spinner Thomas Kentish 2 for 42 and Kenny Hobson 2 for 44. Windward Islands second innings 133 all out: Kenny Hobson 41 not out, C. St Prix 19, Ignatius Caddette 17, off spinner Suresh Ganouri was unplayable again this time he took 6 for 35 giving him match figures 13 for 59 eclipsing the then record of Barbadian Wayne Daniel who took 13 for 69 the previous year 1975 vs the Leewards at Kensington Oval. Pacer Keith Farley backed up Ganouri with 2 for 32, while Harry Ramsunai and Sen Gopaul took a wicket each. Set 5 to win Guyana knocked off the runs without losing any wickets.
Finals: Guyana vs Jamaica at Sabina Park; the Sen Gopaul Show. Jamaica first innings 132 all out, Sen Gopaul bagged 6 for 32. Guyana first innings 265 all out: Andrew Lyght 106. Jamaica second innings 134 all out Sen Gopaul 6 for 47 giving him match figures of 12 for 79. Guyana second innings, set 5 for victory they hit off the runs without losing any wickets.
