A decision looms on whether Regan Rodrigues will face a judge and jury for the murder of political
activist, Courtney Crum-Ewing when the prosecution wraps up its case in the Preliminary Inquiry (PI) on Friday.
Yesterday, Attorney Nigel Hughes indicated that he will close the prosecution’s case with the continuation of testimony from Detective Inspector Suraj Singh.
Inspector Singh is attached to the Major Crimes Investigation Unit, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Eve Leary, Georgetown. He assisted with the investigation into the murder of Crum-Ewing allegedly committed by Rodrigues on March, 10, 2015 at Diamond New Scheme, East Bank Demerara.
Inspector Singh began testifying before Magistrate Judy Latchman yesterday, in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. However, his testimony was suspended after he complained of feeling unwell.
According to reports, the bullet-riddled body of Crum-Ewing was found at Third Avenue, Diamond New Scheme, EBD. The 40-year-old was shot twice to the temple, once to the back of the head and twice to the stomach.
The police in a statement had stated that the political activist was accosted by four men in a car,
one of whom discharged several rounds, hitting him about the body. It was reported that the killer(s) used a .32 pistol to execute Crum-Ewing.
Crum-Ewing was well known for his one-man protest in front of the office of former Attorney General (AG) Anil Nandlall. Minutes before he was gunned down, he was reportedly heard via bullhorn urging residents of the neighbourhood to vote against then ruling party PPP/C.
Earlier this year, Rodrigues, a father of three, was jailed for three years by a City Magistrate for escaping from police custody. On July 13, 2015 at Riverview, Ruimveldt, the police were at Rodrigues home conducting a search. It was alleged that a gun was found under a chair in his home.
Rodrigues was arrested by the lawmen and while being escorted to the police station, he pushed the arresting officer and made good his escape. However, he was arrested the following day in the vicinity of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary.

The attempt to close this matter with conviction of an itinerant hit man, when he had no motive for this crime is odious. What this indicate, is like in the George Bacchus murder, the people who orchestrated it are untiuchable, regardless of which party is in power.
The lives of the brave, the principled, the people who dare to challenge vindictive, oppressive, and racist power structures do not matter to those who inherit the fruits of their sacrifices. We saw that graphically manifested in the withdrawal of the Oliver Tambo award for Burnham by the bought and paid for supplicant Jacob Zuma. We are seeing shades of the same ingratitude and betrayal with regard to the martyrdom of Ronald Waddell, George Bacchus and Courtney Crum Ewing.
