With the East Bank Demerara thoroughfare currently being expanded to accommodate additional lanes among other upgrades, commuters and drivers have both registered their disappointment with the ‘poor’ traffic management measures that are currently in place.
One driver expressed his concern saying that there are no adequate demarcations in place to caution drivers in advance of the sudden rise, merges and diversions along the roadways.
Also, there have been reports that drivers are stopping and removing barricades to gain access to uncompleted roadways. Vehicles are also seen driving over curbs to gain access to sidewalks endangering the lives of passengers and pedestrians.
Meanwhile, vehicles are also seen encroaching the one-way roadway resulting in oncoming vehicles dashing to avoid collision.
A Police spokesperson, when contacted, recently stated that onus was on the contractors to have systems in place to manage traffic however, the Police have been working with the contractors to have better systems in place, while operators as well as pedestrians should utilise the roadways in a careful manner so as to avoid mishaps.
“It’s common sense, if you see a barricade why would you want to remove it? It was placed there for a reason…To avoid you from driving terrain that is still under construction that can harm your vehicle and passengers,”
He also called on persons witnessing these events, must report it to the police so that action can be taken.
