Dear Editor,
It was pointed out that three years after winning the 2011 Elections, the PPP/C has failed to make good on its promise to create 2000 jobs in Linden, Region 10.
During APNU+AFC campaign trail, they also made promise to create jobs for the unemployed mainly the youths who came out in their number and voted at 2015 general and regional election in support of APNU+AFC party with the expectation that when the APNU+AFC win the elections they will fulfill their promises instead of failing like the former PPP/C government. But to date, the APNU+AFC Government is still to put systems in place to fulfill their job creation promise.
The People United and General Workers Union is confident that the APNU+AFC Government can create and have jobs available for every unemployed Guyanese. In doing so, the government need not depend on privet and foreign investors to create jobs for Guyanese. It needs to start creating jobs on its own by establishing and reopening factory that was closed years ago. Note the following;
(1)Re-establish the cotton factory at Kimba. The operation at Kimba will involve cultivation in the intermediate savannahs and processing the product into cotton fabric at the textile factory that was built by the Chinese government in Ruimveldt, Georgetown. The factory at Georgetown will need to be rebuilt in a state of the heart manner. The operation at Kimba will create employment for the Amerindians and other persons who live Kimba/along the Berbice River and the factory at Georgetown will create employment for the residents of Georgetown where the factory will be located.
(2) The Government should relocate and reestablish the glass factory which was established by the PNC government. Based on information received, the factory was closed because when the glass was being processed, it cracked due to the area the factory is located next to the airport; when the airplane took or touching down at the airport, the vibrations from airport cracked the glass.
(3) The Government should re-establish the clay brick factory that was established under the PNC government. The factory can be established in Region10 at Ituni. The residents of Ituni mainly depend on logging to make their daily living. If the factory is established, residents will be able to move away from logging and seek employment with the factory. This will ease cutting of logs which will strengthen the Guyana and Norway agreement etc.
(4) The Government should re-establish the food canning factory that was established by the PNC government. This factory will can food products that are being produced by farmers and create employment for Guyanese.
(5) The Government should open a waste recycling factory. This factory will help reduce or eliminate the plastic cans and other materials off of the streets, road and drains in Guyana. The factory can set a price and pay for the items and provide trucks to drive around Guyana on schedule dates to pick up the items at pacific points, homes and business places etc. The factory can also provide trucks and work along with town councils in each region since they are responsible for uplifting garbage in their community which will include items that the factory will need for recycling purposes.
(6) The Government should establish a plant which will recycle tires and manufacture rubberized bitumen. Such a plant would create employment for Guyanese and help the economy since better roads would facilitate the transporting of goods from one area to another, as well as boost agriculture. Vehicle owners could sell their used tires to the factory to help pay for new tires for their vehicles. (it will be remembered that the APNU+AFC Government has banned the importation of used tires.)
(7) The government should establish a food plan that will dry and package fruits the AFC promised on their campaign trail to establish such a factory in Berbice.
(8) The government should establish a vehicle assembling factory in Linden which will reduce the cost for vehicles and create jobs for the unemployed not forgetting that the AFC party in the past had promised to same in Linden during a visit to Linden.
Editor Trinidad & Tobago don’t have resources and general land space as Guyana has but still they have more factories and their money has a higher value than Guyana. If Guyana can manage it resources properly by establishing factories that will convert our natural resources to finish products it will decrease our imports and increase our exports. This will lead to taking up the value of our Guyana dollar and selling the products locally and overseas which will add money to the Treasury and boost the economy of Guyana and also create thousands of jobs for Guyanese.
