In a gruesome Emancipation Day accident, an unidentified man was crushed by a John Fernandes Limited container truck near the Croal Street and Avenue of the Republic intersection.
The man, who eyewitnesses described as middle aged and of Amerindian ancestry, was reportedly run over by the vehicle around 18.45 hrs, while crossing from Croal Street to Avenue of the Republic.
The victim was virtually flattened, with his body parts, including what looked like a heart, strewn around the area.
Police said that the driver, Paul Taylor, related that the accident occurred while he was heading south along Avenue of the Republic on his way to the John Fernandes terminal on Mandela Avenue.
He claimed that the traffic light at the intersection indicated green, and he crossed over Croal Street. He was close to Hadfield Street, and had no clue that anything was amiss until persons shouted that he had run over someone.
A vendor who was selling beverages said that the victim had passed him on the Avenue of the Republic a few minutes prior to the accident. He said that the man was staggering and almost tumbled into a gutter.
About 20 minutes later, the vendor said he heard a “pop” and “squishing” sound. He then saw people running towards Croal Street and realised that an accident had occurred.
Undertakers from the Lyken Funeral Home eventually took the body away.
