…No reports of Zika since January
The World Health Organisation and the Pan American Health Organisation have published a Zika-Epidemiological Report on Guyana for the year as of June 2016. It has reported that there has been a rise in cases of dengue within the country.
According to the report, in 2015 there were 142 probable cases of dengue. It said that this statistic represented an incidence rate of 17.6 cases per 100,000 of the population. As of April 2016 the report said that there were 303 probable cases of dengue with an incidence rate of 37.5 cases per 100,000 of the Guyanese population.
With regard to Chikungunya, the report said that the disease was first recognized in 2014 and by the end of that year there were a total of 76 confirmed cases. The report said that the 2014 statistics will be lower than 2016 since thus far a total of 29 confirmed cases have been reported.
The two international health organisations also looked at the Zika virus and reported that since the first reported detection of the virus in Guyana January last there has not been another reported case.
According to the report the first confirmed case was a resident of Region six, Berbice. As a result there are no cases of Zika in pregnant women in Guyana.
This has been one of the major concerns for authorities since the Zika virus in pregnant women has been linked to Microcephaly. This is a disorder in babies born to Zika infected mothers.
The infants suffer from an abnormal smallness of the head, which is a congenital condition associated with incomplete brain development.
If there are any suspected Zika cases, Guyana sends samples to the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) for confirmation.
Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika are all transmitted by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito. Their symptoms are quite similar in nature. In most cases persons are affected by fever, rash, headache, muscle and joint pain.
