Guyana playing under the captaincy of Timur Mohamed won the 1975 Benson and Hedges Regional Under 19 Cricket Championship. The land of many waters zoned with the Windward Islands and host Trinidad and Tobago beat the Windwards outright and drew with Trinidad and Tobago but went on to beat Barbados on first innings points in the finals at the Kensington Oval.
The heroes for the 1975 Championship were Mark Harper who scored consecutive centuries 140 against the Windwards at Gilbert Park and 102 vs Trinidad and Tobago at the Queens Park Oval. Skipper Timur Mohamed who created history with centuries in each innings against Barbados in the finals at Kensington Oval. Mohamed tamed Wayne Daniel and company with 158 and 103 not out. Other consistent performers were all rounder Harry Ramsunai, off spinner Suresh Ganouri, leg spinner Sen Gopaul and fast bowlers Dennis Hewitt and Keith Farley.
Today Kaieteur Sports and Statistician Charwayne Walker will take readers 41 years back when Timur Mohamed marshaled his troops and captured Guyana’s second Regional Under 19 title. Their mission started with the destruction of the Windward Islands at Gilbert Park in Trinidad, Guyana won by an innings and 16 runs.
Windward Islands first innings 162 all out. Ignatius Caddette 29, Albert Joseph 27, V. Dougan 20. Bowling for Guyana: pacer Dennis Hewitt captured 4 for 34. Off spinner Suresh Ganouri took 4 for 41. Guyana first innings 332 for 6 declared Mark Harper 140 was the talk of Port of Spain, Harry Ramsunai 83, skipper Timur Mohamed 47, Andrew Lyght 32. Richard Todd was the Windward’s best bowler with 3 for 63. Windward Islands second innings 154 all out: Michael Warner 37, Thomas Kentish 24. Bowling for Guyana Keith Farley took 3 for 39, Suresh Ganouri 3 for 34, Sen Gopaul 3 for 47.
Guyana vs Trinidad and Tobago at Queens Park Oval resulted in a draw. Trinidad and Tobago won first innings points but failed to advance to the finals because of the fact that they lost to the Windward Islands outright and Guyana defeated the Windwards outright.
Scores: Trinidad and Tobago first innings 408 for declared, A. McCleod 110, Lance Cassimy 83, Kenrick Bainey 80, skipper Randy Gomes 41, C. Abow 40 not out. Pacer Dennis Hewitt took 2 for 75 and Suresh Ganouri 2 for 83 bowling for Guyana. Guyana first innings 374 all out; Mark Harper 102 headlined all News Papers in Port of Spain. Ramrattan Jagnarine 93, Mirza Hussien 49, Timur Mohamed 36, Andrew Lyght 24. Trinidad and Tobago second innings 76 for 4 declared. Guyana second innings 48 for one: Andrew Lyght 30 not out.
Finals vs Barbados at the Kensington Oval: Guyana first innings 366 all out. Skipper Timur Mohamed 158, Harry Ramsunai 28, Mark Harper 25, Sen Gopaul 25. Bowling for Barbados: Wayne Daniel took 3 for 80, Noel Broomes 2 for 83, Calvin Hope 4 for 51. Barbados first innings 250 all out: Wayne Daniel 49, John Slocombe 39, Desmond Haynes 31. Bowling for Guyana: Harry Ramsunai took 2 for 37, Colin Carroll 2 for 39, Sen Gopaul 2 for 41, Suresh Ganouri 2 for 71. Guyana second innings 254 for 4 declared. Timur Mohamed 103 not out, Harry Ramsunai 70 not out. Bowling for Barbados: Pedro Corbin captured 3 for 49. Barbados second innings 131 for 5: Desmond Haynes 38, Calvin Hope 21 not out. Bowling for Guyana: pacer Dennis Hewitt took 2 for 37, Suresh Ganouri 2 for 42, Colin Carroll 1 for 9. Guyana won the Championship by winning first innings points. Skipper Timur Mohamed was named man of the match for his centuries in each innings.
