He was virtually a secret until he employed a savage two fisted attack that demolished Clive Atwell to claim the vacant WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) lightweight title late last year. He has not entered the ring since but now, Dexter Gonsalves is preparing for fistic duties once again when he tackles former World Boxing Organization Super Lightweight champion, American, DeMarcus ‘Chop Chop’ Corley for the Fecarbox lightweight title on August 27 at the Giftland Office Max Mall, Lilliendaal ECD.
The fight is being promoted by the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) and would be complimented by several other bouts with the main supporter being Mark Austin up against Jamaican, Michael Gardener in a 6 rounds lightweight affair. Fans will also be entertained with the highly anticipated return clash between Quincy Gomes and Imran Khan; the two lightweights will duke it out in a scheduled 6 rounder.
Two other bouts will compliment the card and Kelsey George will match gloves with Barbadian, Charwin Estwick in the super/ middleweight division, while Anthony Narine will take on Keeve Allicock in a 4 rounds lightweight encounter.
The local boxers convened at the Avenue of the Republic office of Abdool and Abdools to affix their signatures on their respective contracts and the level of optimism was high. Usually a reticent individual, Gonsalves boldly stated that he is ready for anything his opponent has to offer. He said that he had huddled with his coach and other members of his team after his last fight and they had highlighted some of his errors that needed to be fixed. “I have since started working on those errors and fans could expect a much improved performance in this fight,” promised Gonsalves.
He is now under the management of Aleem Hussein of Nexsgen Gonsalves
Despite not fighting since the Atwell encounter, Gonsalves had visited the gym at least three times a week to stay in shape and will be expected to intensify activities following the confirmation. He has compiled an 8-1-2 record and five of his bouts were abbreviated giving him a decent 45% knockout ratio.
Gonsalves’ international experience is restricted to several fights in Trinidad and Tobago where he has lived for a number of years. It was during his sojourn in that country that he suffered his lone loss to Michel Agard. This was the very fighter with whom he had also fought to a drawn decision.
The only other blemish to his record was another drawn decision to Jamaican, Muhammed Dawes in Marabella Trinidad and Tobago in December 2007. He is still riding high following the win over Atwell and relishing a win over Corley which could propel him into the world rankings.
Corley, a veteran with valuable experience has compiled a 47-27-1 record stopping 28 of his opponents for a decent 37% knockout ratio.
He was recently in Jamaica for this year’s edition of the Contender series and won three fights with knockouts against Richard Holmes and Revlon Lake, while scoring a points win over Michael Gardener. Otherwise, he had tangled with such big names as Zab Judah in defence of his World Boxing Organization Super Lightweight which he lost.
Corley has also faced Guyana’s former Olympics representative, Dillon Carew twice winning one fight unanimously while the two fought to a draw in the other encounter. Other big names on Corley’s resume include Darryl Tyson and Floyd Mayweather Jr among others.
