Dear Editor,
A few things bother me, and I wish you will tolerate and accommodate my comments and consider them worthy of publication. I wish to explain a very elementary fact that if I criticize or object to a point of view offered by anyone it does not mean that I am criticizing that person for all he is — we have to agree to disagree on issues, but that shall not make that person my enemy or that he feels I have the world against him. Parents correct their children, pointing out faults as they seem them. But that does not make the parent dislike or hate the child.
What prompted me to write is what I saw published in all the newspapers. A man named Ghani was or maybe still ill but received treatment at a hospital. Official of the hospital together with the medical personnel who attended him went public with his story. I think it is wrong for a man’s illness to be publicized. I think it is worse when, if I am right, the idea behind the publication (going to the press) was not in his interest but a criticism of the former institution — although not named, and (b) touting of the hospital where he received treatment. It is immoral and wrong for doctors to so advertise their expertise at the expense, humiliation of their parents.
Persons who perform public service should be torchbearers showing the light, but be the torch-holders — in the dark projecting their light.
Secondly, Lincoln Lewis is known to all and sundry but he made a slip in his publication about two weeks dealing with the shooting of protestors in Linden/Mackenzie a few years ago. He premised his article in the press by stating that the protest was as a result of the Government’s intention to increase the price for electricity which consumers in that area should pay – $5.00 per kwh instead of $65.00 which all other communities in the country must pay. What he neglected to tell his audience was that Mr. David Granger, the opposition leader at the time, had agreed with the Government to increase the rates. Indeed the Prime Minister of the day announced the Agreement in the Parliament where Mr Granger was present.
Thirdly, sorry to go back to parking meters. I cannot understand the objection by the Mayoress and Town Clerk and that guy who wants to imitate Joe Harmon to relate with consumers in general and the citizens of Georgetown in particular. The parking meter contract is for 49 years. In the age and speed of technology who can foretell what will happen in the 4 of the 49 years. Has the Police Traffic department been a party to this — will the vehicles that use the meters be parked horizontally? What space would be allocated to each vehicle? Would there by restriction to lorries or containers?
Would the parking be limited for certain hours or should there be no parking without paying the fee for 24 hours? Would the parking be for 7 days per week? Would the law relating to no parking within 30 feet from a corner be-honoured? Have the Town Clerk and Mayor who are reported out of the country gone on parking meters business? Would the meters be placed in such a position that parked vehicles will obstruct entrances to private or even public properties? When the “Company” operating the parking meters collect their millions of Guyana dollars and then convert same to US Dollars to be sent overseas, would the rates be affected which in effect can cause a devaluation of the Guyana dollar?
Fourthly, there is much talk about setting up a something to commemorate the deaths of those who were in the boat —the Sun Chapman. Mention must be made that members of a section of Wismar were tragic victims of violence. My contention is that when facts are set out there should not be suppression of related incidents which may have had connection — directly or indirectly —to those facts.
