After almost losing his life during an accident on the Reliance Public Road, five-time chutney winner, Haresh Singh, is now bedridden.
Singh’s left leg was broken in three places and after undergoing two major surgeries, doctors have inserted a steel plate and several steel rods in his leg to aid in the healing process.
Singh had attended a wedding in a neighbouring Village from his Cotton Field home. He was returning home when an unlicensed Tapakuma driver, struck him down and left him unattended and unconscious on the Reliance Public Road.
Several residents who were alerted by the loud impact rushed to the scene and transported him to the Suddie Public Hospital. Singh was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
“I regain consciousness after I overheard my niece telling someone to take me to the hospital. I must have blacked out again because I found that I was lying on the X-tray table”.
Singh explained, that the incident occurred on July 11, last, the same day he celebrated his birthday.
The Chutney King recalled leaving his Cotton Field, Essequibo home around noon. Some time between 5 and 6pm on the day in question, he was walking on the Reliance Public Road to his home when he was struck down.
The unlicensed driver was charged and fined for driving under the influence of alcohol. He was also charged with dangerous driving to which he pleaded not guilty.
Singh is currently unable to perform on stage. He had to cancel a trip to New York. “Being an artiste is what I depend on for my livelihood.”
Meanwhile, a drunken motorcyclist rode into a parked car Wednesday night in front of the Anna Regina Post Office. The young man was rendered unconscious.
