The case against a woman accused of posting death threats related to President David Granger, via
Facebook, was yesterday thrown out by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
The Magistrate ruled that the particulars of the allegations against 52-year-old Bibi Safoora Salim, of Vergenogen, East Bank Essequibo, did not create an offence, thus she dismissed the charges.
One of the charges alleged that during the period of March 1 and 31, last, the woman attempted to incite hostility or ill-will against the President by posting on Facebook “Granger want a bullet in he head” among others.
She was also accused of sending derogatory remarks about the President from her cell phone to her son’s cell phone via WhatsApp.
Salim, a mother of three, was charged under the Racial Hostility Act for attempting to incite excitement, hostility or ill-will on the ground of race.
An attorney for the woman had argued that the charges were void, because the particulars did not state how her posting on Facebook violated the Racial Hostility Act.
At Salim’s first court hearing, her lawyer had contended that his client was “technologically challenged” and said that it was highly unlikely that she made the posts. However, Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers had objected to her being released on bail, on the grounds that Salim had admitted to police that she was the one who posted the comments and remarks.
Jeffers had also pointed out the serious nature of the charges and the fact that the threats to the president and racial remarks attracted comments from others.
But his objections were overruled by the Magistrate and Salim was released on $200,000 bail.
