Following a disappointing performance in the opening leg of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) in Jamaica, Guyana’s Matthew Vieira stormed back into contention in the points standing with a flawless
display at Wallerfield in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) over the weekend.
Vieira, who was trailing his cousin Stephen ‘Valentino Rossi’ Vieira in the points standing, blitzed to victory in all three races to be crowned champion in the Superbike category, relegating his more illustrious compatriot Stephen to second place on every occasion, while T&T’s Kiel Abraham captured two third places and another Trinidadian Dominic DeLeon finished third in the final race in the category.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday, the young Vieira, who many believe is the heir apparent to Stephen, he expressed confidence of doing well for the remainder of the championship, adding that his goal was to get as many points as possible heading into the third leg at Bushy Park in Barbados.
Quizzed about how good is his chance of winning the overall title, Vieira said it will be difficult as long as Stephen competes, but he is willing to go out on the track and utilise all his skills to capture the coveted crown.
“As you know Stephen is one of the best in the Caribbean and someone who is very hard to beat, but I will do my best to upstage him in the next two legs,” young Vieira said.
Another cousin Elliott, who suffered mechanical problems and was unable to compete, though not a threat mathematically at this point, is also capable of causing anxiety among the top contenders.
Commenting on his performance, Vieira, who qualified behind Stephen and Elliott on his Triumph Daytona 675R, said that all three races were very competitive and he believes that the equaliser was the fact that the track was a new one so no rider had a distinct advantage.
“It was a fantastic experience I got the results I wanted and hopefully I can build on that during the remaining two legs of the championship,” Vieira told this newspaper.
He, however, praised the other riders for their performances and making the races thrilling for the fans.
Vieira extended heartfelt thanks to his father Mark, whose support made it possible for him to compete, while also acknowledging the assistance of Andy Phang of Pure Racing, Rio Inn and Cyril’s Garage.
