Two St Lucian cub scouts were struck down on Woolford Avenue yesterday at around 13:00hrs. According to reports, a female driver was speeding up the one way and smashed into the young children just in front of the Scout Association building.
One escaped serious injuries while the other child was pinned under the vehicle in the roadside drain. The two children, eight-year-old Nick Omarie Joseph and Parnell Matthews, 9, are currently in Guyana participating in the 14th Caribbean Scouts Cuboree.
Reports are that the female driver of the car allegedly had an altercation with another individual at the North Georgetown Secondary School. She was refused entry to the school because of the way she was dressed. After the confrontation she reportedly got into her vehicle, motor car PSS 1236 and accelerated east along Woolford Avenue and struck the children.
According to an eyewitness, the woman lost control of the vehicle and ended up in the drain pinning one of the children, Nick Joseph, under the vehicle.
The child was reportedly trapped under the car for about five minutes before being rescued by a scout leader. Kaieteur News understands that the child suffered severe head injuries and as a result of being pinned in the drain, ingested a large amount of water. At around 17:00hrs this publication was told that the child is listed as critical in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
The driver of the car reportedly told police officers that she didn’t know what had happened as she blanked out at the time of the accident.
President David Granger in a statement to the press said that he was deeply saddened when he learned of the accident.
The President was reportedly in Cabinet when he learned of the accident. He immediately ordered that the Childcare and Protection Agency (CPA) of the Ministry of Social Protection provide counselling services to the remaining Cub Scouts, some 700 in number. This publication understands that a team of three counsellors was dispatched to the Scout Association of Guyana on Woolford Avenue.
First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger, who had just spoken to the group during their morning session and had only just left when the accident occurred, immediately rushed to the GPHC on learning of the accident and spent some time at the bedsides of both children. Minister of Education, Nicolette Henry, President of the Scouts Association of Guyana Mr. Ramsey Ali and members of the Saint Lucia Scout Association were also present.
In the release, President Granger commended the doctors at the GPHC for the care being provided to the two boys and prays for a full and quick recovery. He also extended words of comfort to the members of the Saint Lucia Scout Association, the Scout Association of Guyana and all the other Cub Scouts in Guyana for the Cuboree.
The driver of the vehicle involved in the accident remains in custody as the Police conduct investigations.
