Keith Ferrier, the man accused of setting the Ministry of Health on fire in July 2009 was yesterday freed of the charge by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The Magistrate upheld a no case submission made by Ferreira’s attorney, Patrice Henry. During her ruling, Magistrate McLennan dismissed the charge on the ground that the prosecution’s witnesses failed to provide sufficient evidence to prove the elements of the offence.
Ferrier told Kaieteur News that the allegation against him was politically motivated by the previous government.
“I knew the day would come when justice would be served. It’s evident that there is justice in our system.”
Ferrier added that at one point he was forced to flee the country because of threats made on his life.
Keith Ferrier was captured on March 7, after seven years on the run. He was apprehended on North Road, Bourda, Georgetown.
The fire, believed to have been sparked by ‘channa bombs’, completely destroyed the Ministry’s of Health main building and an annex at Brickdam in the wee hours of July 17, 2009.
Back in 2013, two men were sentenced to 66 months imprisonment each, after they were found guilty of unlawfully and maliciously setting fire to the public building.
The men were Collin Jones and Clayton Westford.
It was reported that the building had been in existence for more than 100 years and during the fire, various documents were lost which included records relating to professional examination, financial administration, procurement, payment as well as the history of the building.
