Dear Editor;
Surprise! Former President Jagdeo, as usual, attempted to misinform in order to mislead PPP supporters. He lamented to a gathering, during a Guyana family fun day event in Queens, New York (weekend of 23-24 July) about some ‘… assault on Guyana’s democracy, assault on people of Indian origin and supporters of the PPP, even worse in some regards than the Burnham era…’
Editor, it is not about any of these things. One should expect this from him. He does the same thing at home. This is about a corrupt power drunkard seeking sympathy for himself, his cronies and the government he led, because of the discredit and exposure from the Audits. The recent revelation about a Permanent Secretary in the heart of his Presidency and billions of unexplained dollars is particularly damaging. His antics suggest real panic.
He had hoped, even with the change of government that everything would have been swept under the carpet; that ill-gotten unexplained gains from misappropriation of taxpayers’ money and other resources would have simply disappeared without question and that it would be condoned, excused under his notion of politics.
He wants this episode and the withering criticisms to just go away. He is in no position to misuse the power of the state to suppress criticism and scrutiny however, so he resorts to the usual lowest common dominators. He can’t handle a real democracy in action with its high standards of accountability. This is precisely what made him such an awful president.
He should have taken the high road and explained to his listeners what the Audits found. One is certain however that they read the reports which are on-line, and while they may have politely listened he did not succeed in deceiving them.
The question his listeners could have asked him however, is, who should answer for transgressions against the State of Guyana under PPP administrations, and what should the answer be? Expect more of the same from former President Jagdeo.
