“You will declare this 50th year sacred and proclaim the liberation of all the inhabitants of the land. This is to be a jubilee for you. Each of you should return to your ancestral home” – Leviticus 25:10.
This is the premise on which the Hebrew family of Guyana will join the Government and people of Guyana to celebrate the year of Jubilee.
Guyana became an independent nation on May 26, 1966 and is therefore currently celebrating its Golden Jubilee.
According to a statement issued by the Hebrew Family, “This is a joyous time for both Guyana and the Israelite nation.”
“According to the cultural practice of our ancient Hebrew foreparents, Ha Yovel (Jubilee) was a time of forgiveness, releasing of debts, reconciliation and renewed brotherhood. So it is imperative at this time that the Afro-Guyanese community embarks on a mission of unity, harmony and a renewed spirit of love in order to serve humanity,” said the Hebrew Family’s statement.
The religious body has observed that “This is a very troubling time in our world, as we are overwhelmed with news of violence, bloodshed and injustices. Like a ship lost at sea and desperately seeking to be found, the nations of the world are looking for a true example of universal brotherhood.”
As such the Family has noted, “As people of Guyana let’s take this golden opportunity to practise the culture of the Israelites and be a beacon for the world to see.”
As Guyana celebrates its jubilee, more than 5,000 African Hebrew Israelites living in the land of Israel are also celebrating Ha Yovel and the ‘Dawn of a New Day’.
In keeping with same, the Hebrew Family of Guyana will be hosting its international Hebrew family members as part of the ‘Dawn of a New Day’ celebration.
A number of activities will characterize the celebration including an official launch at the Hebrew Building today and an Emancipation Concert at the National Cultural Centre tomorrow.
The concert will celebrate Guyana’s Jubilee and Emancipation from 8pm and will feature International Artist Elijah Rocq, Renown Poet Kamadyah Yisrael, International Hebrew drummers, Eze and the Yoruba singers, Charmaine Blackman and many more.
All are welcome to join in celebrating the African culture and be exposed to traditional dress and foods including: kankee, pone, mauby and many more. Tickets for the event cost $1000, $1500 and $2000 and are available at National Cultural Center.
Other events will include a Mini Summit (Hebrew Building) on July 29, Special Sabbath Service (Hebrew Building) on July 30 and a Banquet at Pegasus Hotel on July 31.
On August 1, the Hebrew Family will also deliver performances at the Emancipation celebration at the National Park.
