Berbice under-15 middle order batsman Chanderpaul Govindan copped the prestigious Cricketer of the 2016 Cricket Academy Award as the curtains came down on a highly successful RHTYSC, M.S/TCL Cricket Academy on Friday last. The closing ceremony of the Academy was held at the St. Francis Community Developers Training Centre and was attended by all ninety four (94) young cricketers who successfully completed the two weeks Camp which was held from the 11th to 23rd of July at the Club’s Area ‘H’ Ground.
The 2016 Cricket Academy was described as the most successful in the 26 years history of the Club hosting its cricket development programme. Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster hailed the work done by Coaches Winston Smith, Delbert Hicks and Berbice Senior Player Eon Hooper and stated that the future of the RHTYSC as a major cricketing force was secured. He disclosed that the young cricketers were coached on batting, bowling, fielding and wicketkeeping, while a lot of work was done on the physical fitness of each player. Several classroom lectures were also done by using the RHTYSC Youth Information Booklet on topics such as Drug Abuse, Suicide, HIV/Aids, Importance of Education, Importance of Discipline, Choosing of Friends, Role of a Sports Ambassador, History of Cricket and Rules of the Game.
Foster, who was serving as Director of the Cricket Academy for the 26th Consecutive year, urged the attentive cricketers to develop a culture of discipline, hard work, dedication, a desire for success if they want to succeed in Life and he also urged them to listen to the advice of elders. Foster also spoke widely on the importance of having faith in God and called on the cricketers to attend Church on a regular basis. The long serving Club Secretary/CEO also advised the youths that every RHTYSC, MS member have to be prepared to work hard to make a positive difference in the lives of those less fortunate than them.
The RHTYSC, MS, Foster stated has Guyana’s largest cricket nursery and would continue to invest heavily in youths to make sure that everyone fulfils his/her potential. Noting that the Club is perhaps the only one in the world, where cricket membership is free and the Club provides everything free of cost to its members, the Secretary/CEO urged the attentive youths to take advantage of the opportunities to develop themselves.
Foster expressed gratitude to the Management of the Trinidad Cements Ltd for their support for the 5th successive year especially Plant Manager Mark Bender and Marketing Staff headed by Latoya Greaves. The TCL sponsorship, Foster stated has assisted to develop the career of Numerous Berbice and Guyana Cricketers like Chanderpaul Govindan, Brandon Corlette, Keith Simpson, Junior Sinclair, Kevlon Anderson, Slyus Tyndall, Sherica Campbelle, Marian Samaroo, Diana Prahald, Sheneta Grimmond, Deborah Vanderstoop, Plaffina Millington, Shabika Gajnabi and Aleema Arokuim.
Head Coach Winston Smith urged the ninety four young cricketers to put into practise what they have learned and to seek the guidance of those who have played the game before them. He congratulated the academy members of their remarkable discipline and attitude, which he described as excellent.
The top twelve awardees of the 2016 Cricket Academy were Best Batsman – Civion Arokuim, Best Bowler – Diana Prahald, Most Discipline – Mathew Prass, Best Under 13 Player – Christopher Deroop, Best Under 15 – Neil Tillakrum, Best Under 17 – Vijay Gopilall, Best Under 19 – David Prahald, Best Female Player – Sheneta Grimmond, Most Committed Player – Anthony February, Most Promising Player – Matthew Pottaya, Best Attendance/Attitude – Vishal Naidu and Cricketer of the Academy – Chanderpaul Govindan.
Each of the awardees received a school bag and a collection of educational materials, while Govindan also received a trophy and medal.
The RHTYSC, MS would like to express gratitude to Bakewell, Bermudez, Guyana Beverage Company, D.D.L, Spready’s Snackette, H.A Snacks Co.
