Doctors are yet to remove the bullet that is lodged in Onika Luke, the 16-year-old waitress who was shot during a botched robbery at the Lucky Star Chinese Restaurant, Better Hope, East Coast Demerara.
Luke has been discharged from a private city hospital and is at home recovering.
Yesterday, a brother of the teenager, Wendell Ranjee, said that he is unsure of when doctors will operate on his sister. However, he said that her condition has been improving.
The bullet which was lodged near the teenager’s spine has since moved giving doctors hope that she will survive surgery, the brother said.
“The bullet has moved about one inch from her spine,” Ranjee disclosed.
Ranjee had said that doctors have been delaying the operation because it would have been risky to perform surgery on her because of where the bullet was lodged.
Luke, of Lot 1 Vryheid Lust, East Coast Demerara, was shot at around 22:45hrs on May 28, last, by a man who had visited the restaurant to order a meal.
While paying for the food, the man held onto Luke, who was behind some grillwork and pulled out a firearm and demanded cash. When she resisted, he shot her in the face and escaped.
The bullet passed through her chin and was lodged in her throat at the time. Her left thumb was also shot off.
The teen attends the St. John’s College and had been working part-time at the restaurant after school hours.
