Ms. Summer Blaze 2016 launched
– Will place focus on building self-esteem and eradication of suicide

With an aim to promote education, build self-esteem and seek national development for Guyanese girls, Maggie’s Craft, in collaboration with Teacher Natasha Summer Programme, will be hosting the annual Miss Summer Blaze this year.
In 2008, the first ever edition of the Miss Summer Blaze Beauty Pageant was launched. Fifteen 15 girls vied for the title that year. The Miss Summer Blaze today has become a vehicle for personal development of social awareness and cultural appreciation.
A release from the promoters/planners yesterday stated that the Pageant is organized and designed to offer something to everyone. It holds to the highest form of integrity and conducts its pageant in a fair and unbiased manner.
It will be operating under the theme, ‘Celebrating youth empowerment to destroy the root cause of suicide’.
“Miss Summer Blaze Pageant serves as a catalyst, to educate our participating teenagers about inner beauty, confidence, social awareness and benevolence. The coronation re-educates our audience while we entertain them in settings that showcase our unique Guyanese ethos through song, dance and drama.
Miss Summer Blaze is not the typical beauty pageant, since all participants must attend eight hours per week classroom sessions for one month (July). Our training team consists of three trained teachers one of whom is the former Miss Summer Blaze 2014, Ms. Akeila Dey.”
Although there is an on-stage competition there are many workshops going on behind the scenes including workshops for self esteem building; entrepreneurship; public speaking and communication.
“This year each contestant will champion the social issue, suicide, in accordance with our theme… Many young women with low self-esteem and zero background in volunteer work become community activists and strong girls through their involvement in the Miss Summer Blaze programme.”
While the promoters are pulling out all the stops, they are calling for support from the populace.
“Your support is needed to help us provide prizes, travelling allowance and materials for the girls to travel across Guyana to do more citizen education using brochures and hand crafted bands which will represent a powerful life changing message.
“This process will be facilitated by a retired teacher and Burrowes School of Arts graduate who would be teaching the girls to make the bands with leather and beads.
“We invite you to support these young ladies in their quest to amass the crown and gain a networking experience of a lifetime and at the same time save lives.”
The organisers stated that the Miss Summer Blaze Foundation celebrates strong, committed teenagers and by supporting the role models of today, they are strengthening their collective tomorrow.
“We hope you will consider supporting these young ladies to help foster strong values, and success in their future endeavours. The pageant committee has written to several potential sponsors to make the ninth edition a success with a view of achieving the pageant objective which is empowering young women and using them as a vehicle to tackle the social issue suicide.”
The promoters/organizers also took the opportunity to thank their sponsors who they said, have already confirmed their willingness to support the pageant.
These sponsors include Packing Associates, Akash Persaud, Chester’s Jewellery, Kalibur Security, Atlas Security INC, Public Service Ministry, Natural Resources Ministry, Republic Bank, Jai Signs, Trophy Stall, and Elegance Styles Studio boutique.
“There is still a long road ahead (and) sponsorship is important in making this programme a success. This year the girls are from The Bishop’s High, Brickdam Secondary, North Ruimveldt Multilateral and Cummings Lodge Secondary.
Several events will be hosted to during the lead up to the pageant which will be held at the Theatre Guild on August 13.
A Bar-be-que will be held on July 30, followed by a Walk-a-ton on August 2. On August 6, a talent show will be held at on the grounds of the Malteenoes Sport Club.
