Guyana go down to Bajans by 49 runs
By Sean Devers
An unbeaten 62 from West Indies player and Barbados Skipper Shaquana Quintyne powered her team to a second consecutive victory by beating Guyana by 49 runs on day two of the WICB Regional Women’s t20 cricket tournament at Providence yesterday.
A five-wicket haul by Jamaican left-arm spinner Shanel Daley and an unbeaten 35 from Skipper Stafanie Tailor, who took her aggregate to 97 runs, fired Jamaica to emphatic eight-wicket win over the Leewards in the opening game.
In the night match T&T made 134 for 4 off 20 overs with Brittany Cooper top scoring with 51 and Merissa Aguilleira supported with 50. Akeria Peters had 3 for 36 for the Windwards who could only reach 66 in 18.3 overs. Juliana Nero top scored with 10. Shayelle Lord, Anisa Mohamed and Karishna Ramharack took two wickets each for T&T to hand them a 73 runs victory.
Player-of-the-Match, 20-year-old Quintyne reached the ropes twice and cleared it two times in her attractive knock which lasted 43 balls. She got support from Kycia Knight (29) and Shamilia Connell (19) as the Bajans galloped to 140-6 from 20 overs.
West Indies Left-arm pacer Erva Giddings continued her good form by following up her 4-17 on Thursday night with 2-34 for Guyana who laboured to 91-5 when their overs expired.
West Indies player Shemaine Campbelle became the first batter to reached 100 runs in the tournament with her undefeated 43 from 40 balls with four fours and a six but nobody else reached 15 as the Guyanese wasted too many dot balls. This was Guyana first defeat after beating the Leewards on Thursday night.
Deandra Dottin had 2-20, while off-spinner Haley Matthews (4-1-7-1) kept the shackles on the batters.
Barbados opted to bat in glorious sunshine and lost Matthews (3) when she pulled Skipper Tremayne Smartt to short mid wicket at 13-1 in the third over.
Kycia Knight was bowled by a no-ball from pacer Akaze Thompson and struck the free hit over cover for four in an over which cost 10 runs as the Bajans stepped on the gas as 19 runs came in five balls bowled by Giddings and Thompson.
Dottin (6) was LBW to Giddings at 31-2 in the next over as Umpire Athol Hamilton took a very long time to make the decision. Knight who hammered four fours and a six in her 18-ball cameo, then edged a catch to the Keeper off Giddings in the sixth over to leave the score 49-3.
The 50 was posted in the next over before Reshelle Griffith (1) was run out and Kaysia Shultz removed Charlene Taitt (4) as two wickets fell in the space of five runs to leave the score on 60-5.
The Barbados Captain, who played 32 ODIs since making her debut Pakistan in 2011, continued to play her shots and reached her 50 with a huge six off Smartt. Her 50 came from 40 balls decorated with two fours and two sixes.
Quintyne shared in partnerships of 35 with Aaliyah Alleyne (12) before Alleyne was run out at 95-6 and 45 runs with Shamila Connel, who hit a couple of boundaries in her undefeated 19.
When Guyana, who replaced Sabrina Munroe with Heema Singh, began their reply, Melaine Henry (10) was run out at 15-1 and Latoya Smith (13) was bowled by Dottin at 28-2.
Lashuna Toussaint (0) was bowled one run later by Matthews as Campbelle struggled to get the ball away, although she swiveled and pulled Shamilia Connell for fours and disdainfully clipped Dottin for another boundary.
Smartt (5) was bowled at 46-4 by Dottin and with the asking rate mounting the result was never in question. Campbelle moved from 25 to 43 with two fours and a six off the last ball of the final over from Alleyne as Thompson (10*) shared in the unfinished 38-run partnership.
In the opening game, the 27-year old Daley, who played the first of her 64 ODIs against Sri Lanka in 2008, spun webs around the batters to finish with 5-11 from four overs to exploit a spin friendly track as the Leewards crawled to 61-9 from 20 overs.
Jenisen Richards, the 29-year-old Antigua, top-scored with 16 while Amanda Edwards (16) hit the only six in the game. But nobody else reached double figures as four Leewards batters failed to score.
Jamaica raced to 63-2 from 5.2 overs with the speed of Usain Bolt as Taylor and Jodian Morgan added 51 for the first wicket at over 10 runs per over.
Morgan reached the ropes on three occasions in her 19 before she was run out, while two runs later Natasha McLean (0) tried to take on Rozel Liburd and was taken at mid-wicket to leave Jamaica on 53-2.
Taylor, who faced just 18 balls in her attractive 35, stroked the ball to the boundary seven times as the West Indies Captain was mindful of the benefits of increasing her teams net run rate with positive batting and finished the contest with delightful straight driven boundary.
Guyana play T&T in their final preliminary round game tomorrow from 14:00hrs, while the Windwards and Leewards face-off at 09:00hrs and unbeaten teams Barbados and Jamaica meet in the night game from 19:00hrs.
