Tailor’s (62), Campbell (64*) & Matthews (27& 4-17) highlight day one action
By Sean Devers
Barbados, Jamaica and Guyana finished in winners’ row after day-one of the WICB
Women’s t20 cricket tournament yesterday at Providence as Stefanie Taylor’s classy 62, a delightful unbeaten 64 from Shemaine Campbelle and Hayley Matthews’ 27 & 4-17 were the highlights of the day which culminated with Guyana playing the debutants Leeward Islands under lights.
A handful of fans watched the poorly promoted night game in which the host won by 55-runs as West Indies batter Campbelle played brilliantly in her unbeaten 64 from 56 balls with seven boundaries and shared in 111 second wicket stand with Melanie Henry who hit a responsible 34 from 54 balls with a single four to see Guyana to 138-2 off their 20 allotted overs.
Skipper Shawnisha Hector again bowled with pace on the slow track and took 2-26 for the Windwards who were restricted to 83-9 from 20 overs as only two batters reached double figures. Erva Giddings finished with 4-15.
Guyana won the toss and batted in windy conditions and lost Latoya Smith (2) when she was removed in the third over by the impressive Hector who plays with the boys in Antigua.
The pint size Campbelle marched to the crease at 9-1 and stamped her authority right away against a team who played only Windball and Tapeball ball cricket before this tournament.
The 23-year-old right-hander who is also Guyana’s Keeper, played an array of audacious shots, dominated the stand and reached her 50 from 44 balls with fours boundaries while Henry played the supporting role with level-headed batting.
Campbelle has a century and fifty from 64 ODIs since making her debut at this level
in 2009 as a 16 year-old and last night showed why she has been a part of the West Indies set up for so long as she batted for 16.3 overs to remain unconquered at the end.
Henry was sent back in the penultimate over by Hector at 120-2 but by then the inexperienced Leewards side had conceded too many runs and taken too few wickets.
When the Islands began their chase left arm West Indies pacer Giddings continued from where she left off in the 50 overs format by removing both openers with the score on nine.
Saneldo Willette (11) stuck around for a while before she bowled by Plaffiana Millington at 37-5 while Antiguan Jenison Richards fought fire with fire and clobbered three fours in 18 before she was sent packing by Smith.
Earlier, in match one, a player-of-the-Match performance by 18-year-old West Indies all-rounder Hayley Matthew led Barbados to a 32-run win over 50-over Champions Trinidad & Tobago.
Matthews who played the first of her 15 ODIs in Australia two years ago, hit five fours in her 20-ball innings and shared in a 52-run opening stand with Kycia Knight (23 from 24 balls) before Barbados slipped from 75-2 to 106-8 when their 20 overs expired.
West Indies batter Deandra Dottin and Reshelle Griffith with 13 each were the only other Bajans to get into the teens.
Leanya Kirby (2-19) and West Indies off-spinner Anisa Mohamed (2-21) were the most successful bowlers for T&T who were bowled out for 74 in 17.2 overs.
Only Renice Boyce (14) and Mohamed who hit the games’ only six in her 13, reached double figures. Off-spinner Matthews got support from Keila Elliott (2-24).
In the day’s second game, 25-year-old Jamaica and West Indies Captain Stefanie Taylor batted brilliantly in a classy 62 to spur her side to a comfortable 56-run win against the Windwards to take the Player-of-the-Match award.
Taylor, with five centuries and 23 fifties from 90 ODIs, reached the boundary six times and cleared it twice in her cultured 48-ball knock and shared in two half-century stands with her West Indian team-mates to lead Jamaica to 148-3 from 20 overs.
Taylor, who reached her 50 from 41 balls with six fours and a six, was dismissed in the last over after adding 57 for the second wicket with Natasha McClean (21) and 67 with Chedean Nation (29) for third wicket.
The Windwards, playing their first game since the 50-over tournament began two weeks, were restricted to 92-5 when their overs ran out. This was despite token resistance from the West Indies pair of Juliana Nero (23) and Skipper Afy Fletcher (19). Roshana Outar had 2-16 for the Jamaicans.
The tournament continues with three more games from 09:00hrs with Guyana playing Barbados in the second game from 14:00hrs.
