A bicycle mechanic was remanded to prison after being charged with the offence of robbery
under-arms, when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Oswald Matthews, 44, of Robb Street, Georgetown, is accused of robbing Ewart Shepherd of a cell phone and $1,500 cash, while armed with a cutlass, on July 12, at High Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones opposed bail for the defendant, citing the gravity of the charge and the fact that an offensive weapon was used during the robbery.
These objections were upheld by the Magistrate and the defendant was refused bail. Matthews, who was unrepresented was ordered to make his next court appearance on September 9.
In another case, Shawn Smith, a clothes vendor was released on $50,000 bail after pleading not guilty to a simple larceny charge before the same Magistrate.
Smith, 45, of South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, is accused of stealing $200,000 cash and US$370 from Arnold Hoppie on July 17, at South Ruimveldt.
Prosecutor Jones objected to the defendant being released on bail.
However, his objections were overruled by the Magistrate. The court heard that Smith has no antecedent.
The Chief Magistrate instructed Smith to return to court on August 23.
